Since im still in the learning phase of the 928,I am curious at what mileage the 4.7 model with average maintenance would need to be rebuilt? Is a car with 200K a prime candidate for rebuild,or not? Thanks.

I'd say at 200k you would truley benefit from a thorough going-through of the engine - rings, valve seals and guides, rod bearings. I would do more than that, but I run the cars I drive very hard.

I all depends on how the engine was run & #1 most important is how it was maintained...... If its been driven 200k miles on the street with documented maintenance...then it could do another 200K.....compression and leakdown will tell everything you need to know.....there are guys on here with over 200K on supercharged motors that still perform as new!

It is rarely the motor itself that will let you down. It is lack of scheduled maintenance that will break the bank. Of course if you should happen to neglect the timing belt, water pump replacement, - THEN you could need a new engine post haste.
The thing is that these are very robust cars, and can be driven without maintenance right up until you have no AC, syncros or clutch is gone, spotty electrical problems, bad interior, TB/WP [as mentioned], tired paint, torque tube bearings , etc, etc.
Now, to put all that right could be no small endeavor. Nice 928s are only a few thousand more in some cases. Pre purchase inspections are a must.
OTOH, beater 928s can be a lot of fun. If you can keep the costs down. Selection, selection, selection.

Thanks for the replies.Speaking of the TB/WP issues,is there a "standard" mileage at which they should be replaced, assuming the car is driven on a fairly normal basis? Thanks.

If you don't know when it was done, the time is now.

Porsche service maintenance indicates 60K miles with no time stated.
Most will recommend every 4-5 years 45K miles, especially on 32V motors.

i dont think there is any need to do rings/bearings unless the motor has problems. the old S2 4.7 engine from my car is currently giving good service in a track car after 180k+

I'm at 186K miles and see no indications of a need for a rebuild anytime soon. Compression is 195-200 in all cylinders, car starts and runs like a new car, gets very regular and strenuous exercise and proper maintanance. Then again, I've seen 928s with 100K miles that are a mess and need a ton of work. Overall I think higher mileage is a good thing.
