Default 8" rear wheels

I have an 86 Euro with 7" factory flat disc wheels. Can I put the 8" factory flat disc wheels on the rear of my car...without any spacers or modifications?

I have a US 86 car and when I put on 8" rears, the tires rub under hard cornering, unless I remove the spacer. If your car has a spacer, you may need to remove it to make sure you have fender clearance. If a spacer is removed, you will need to use open ended lug nuts because the studs are too long for our stock lugs.

If you find that you get some tire-fender rubbing, it is also possible to roll the fender lip in lieu of removing the spacers. I haven't done so, but dozens of others have with good results.

I am not sure if the rear of our two cars, being US and euro, are different in any way. Jim's response may have taken this into account. He knows this stuff better than I.

The S4 8" rears are 52.3mm offset to compensate for not having a spacer. They should still be very close to fitting with the stock 21mm spacer. With a 15mm spacer they should be fine if you want to keep them spaced out. This is assuming your quarter panels are straight. If they rub a little, you can easily pull the lip out to clear with a pair of heavy gloves.

I have 21" rear spacers and 9" CS wheels on my 83 and no rubbing ever.

There you go Tony..........renny always has the answers...........

If you go with the no spacer routine, order up shorter lugs and in the spring we will change them out on my lift before you take the car for the summer. I bet Dave Roberts or Jim can help with the new lugs, or alternately the 15 mm spacers. (Don't go with 21'' spacers, those are for outrigger canoes, use 21mm ones instead. )

Interesting to me that the 89 GT came with spacers that have their own studs. they bolt down over the original lugs using the stock lug nuts. The spacer lugs are off set from the ones on the hub.

Hers is a picture of what I am typing about.

In the highly unlikely event that you need to remove a slide on 21 mm spacer rather than do all the work changing studs you simply cut down the ones you have. Get a steel open ended lug nut run it down on the stud and cut off the desired amount of excess stud ...when you remove the steel nut from the stud it will clean up the threads after the cut .

So if I understand this...I can put 8" factory wheels on my Euro, and if I use the recommended tire size 245/45 - 16, I should be okay with no rubbing issues, and no need for any spacers or open ended lugs?

Default Spacers

Interesting in the picture from Gretch. Looks like you have used the origanal alloy lug nuts to bolt the spacer down...so are you using the open ended steel lug nuts to fasten the wheel to the spacer. Is it incorrect to mount in the oposite way.

Thanks
Glenn.

Wrong on both counts. The stock set up came with alloy nuts on both sets of studs.

The beauty of that was at 90k miles, I did the rear brake rotors and viola, I had a "new" set of alloy nuts to use on the outer studs. One more factual tid bit. When I switched to the Cup II wheels, the hub meat on the wheels was such that I did not need to use open ended lug nuts, in fact I still use the stock alloy nuts, even though I removed the spacers.

Gretch, 21mm is for outrigger canoes???? Jim at 928 recommended I use 21mm and they look fantastic and the car handles great. The rear looks "beefy" with the CS, kinda reminds me of my GTS rear.
