you are right about pre selecting 2nd to get a first gear start and no worries, that gearbox will hold up to that task easily. No worries, looks like you got a nice car. Make sure the t-belt is in good shape and then drive it like you stole it...

lovely looking car, dont worry unduly about anything on your to do list - these cars are exceptionaly well built and cope with daily use no problem. im currently putting about 400m per week on my 79 and its my third daily driver 928. the only thing thats suffering is my wallet with fuel prices here in the uk! there are a lot of things that can go wrong with any car, a good 928 is more reliable than the average car and it sounds like yours is at least ok.

as for manualy shifting the auto box - its compulsory! no problem either, the auto boxes are very tough.

Phew, one less thing to worry about.

I truly do intend to "drive it like I stole it".

Speaking of stealing it, does anybody know anything about "Night Sentinel" alarm systems. The car has one, with a fancy control plate and antenna installed under the hatch on the top of the right side interior panel. Of course I got keys only, no remote fobs or anything, and since the car has to have an immobiliser (state law), I was wondering if I could resurrect what is already there.

And a final word on "stealing it" -AUD$6500 landed (~USD$5500). A fair chunk of change before I saw the car, but not so much now.

Think you got a real good deal there.

When did you go through Windsor? It is a very tough town to live in right now. We went from the highest per capita income to the city with the highest unemployment in less than 5 years (auto industry dependent). Actually work in a town 3 hours from Windsor, now coming home on weekends.

Spent 3 weeks in eastern Australia about 8 years ago. I'm ready to go back in again.

Never heard of Night Sentinel.. however I have a >10 year old Laserline alarm in my car which I'm planning on replacing once I'm done with mechanicals, so I've done some reading on the subject of remote entry/alarms.

The two popular makes among Rennlisters seem to be Commando and Crimestopper - not sure if either brand meets Aus. standards however (I hadn't got that far yet)

Wiring diagrams and advice can be found in these two threads I had saved in my "Subscriptions" fodlers:

https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/241783-installing-an-aftermarket-remote-entry-system.html

https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/141577-remote-door-locks.html

Nice price.. did you import through an agent?

"The 4-speed MB box is at its limit dealing with the power and torque output of the 5 litre V8"
That's what we call Hogwash. The 4 speed auto has been putting up with 400 to 550 hp versions of the 928 for several years with no apparent limits. YMMV.

I'd have done #3 as part of the PPI but other than that you have a good list going, especially with the subsequent comments from others.

69gaugeman: Wife and I toured Canada and US for 6 months WAAAY back in '95. Spent only an hour or so in Windsor, all in the bus terminal. Long story cut short: we caught the bus (Greyhound) from Toronto to Windsor, 'cause we wanted to go to Detroit to see the Ford mansion and Greenfields 'museum' in Dearborn. Bus was rear-ended by a taxi while stopped in the Windsor bus terminal. Un-licensed taxi was driven by un-licensed Somali illegal immigrant, who didn't speak English. It took a while to fill in the accident waivers (no injuries, low-speed collision), and sort everything out so we could swap to another bus and get across the border to Detroit, too late for our connection to Dearborn.

My auto will kink down to a 1 st gear start at about 1/2 throddle from a standing start.
Easy to spin the 245 rears on dry pavement. Good luck and enjoy your classic beauty. Mac

Thanks to all for the comments and suggestions.

Turns out that "Night Sentinel" is a transceiver that picks up signals from a remote control and relays them to a home automation system. Allows you to turn on the lights, and spa heater, while chilling the champagne, all before you get out of the car.

I'm compiling the suggestions into a list, then I'll add part numbers, approximate costs, etc, and maybe see about putting it into the tech section.

Again, thanks to all.

Had a call from the shop doing the PPI.

The good news is that the car seems pretty good overall - couple of oil leaks, but that is to be expected. Compression/leakdown numbers are good, flex-plate clamp didn't move,

Not so good news is:
1) left side markers NOP
2) dash illumination NOP
3) remote hatch release NOP
4) top control arm bushings and tie rod ends worn
5) steering rack leak

The bad news is in two parts - one worse than the other.

1) The transmission fluid "is like tar", so that may be the cause of the hard shifting when stationary or at part throttle. Light throttle and full throttle changes are "beautifully smooth". I'll flush it and change the filter and fluid, drive it for a while, then flush it again. This may turn out to be good news.

2) Someone stole my smog pump! Not a big-deal normally, but probably a fail item on the registration inspection. Anybody got a used one they want to swap for cash via Paypal? It has to make it to Oz though. PM me if so.

Had a chance to drive it for a few kilometres. It goes HARD, and it sounds FABULOUS!

I think I'm addicted.

When you change the tranny fluid, remember to drain the torque converter also. I haven't done it, but I've heard that the converter has it's own drain and if you forget to drain it, you will leave a lot of fluid still in the system.

On the dash illumination.. does it light up when you don't turn the lights on?

My dash lit up properly when I turned on the ignition, and then promptly turned off when I turned on the headlights. Turned out that in one position the dimmer wheel under the dash turned off the dash illumination.

2) dash illumination NOP
3) remote hatch release NOP

Both of those are the same fuse IIRC.
