The quirk in the CARB approval is the test vehicle is taken to the lab and tested.......then the new kit is installed right there at the lab with the inspectors watching......then its tested again.....as long as the emissions don't go up at the 50mph test (conducted at a weight and HP level set by CARB) then it passes....

I also will help out with the testing or installation......whatever is needed to get the EO #.....I just hope one # is good enough for all S4's.....it should be....maybe not for GT's and probably not for GTS's

Knowing how the emissions folks tend to think, I'll bet there'd need to be different tests for manual and auto transmissions...

OK, now that doesn't sound to easy again.

According to a good friend who was very involved with WRX aftermarket parts.....you should estimate $10,000 to $25,000 in FEES TESTING Expenses for your first time doing it. A single test run is not that expensive but if you fail they terminate the test and you must start over. Every piece of the emissions control systems must function as well or better than stock. That includes crank ventilation , charcoal canister purging as well as tailpipe sniffing. Once you finally pass then similar applications subsequently might get done for less as you develop a relationship with the lab. No one in the process has any incentive to make it easy as each retest is revenue ! After you have invested $10,000-20,000 if you stop it is ALL LOST ...It really takes a large number to amortize the likely up front costs.

OK, easy is definitely not the word we're looking for here.

So the idea here would be to have known stock 928, get it past emissions w/known and documented conditions and settings. Now take that same car, install DR's kit, chip, test and tune till it passes, again documentation is the key as it must be repeatable cause it would need to be plug and play. Now back to square 1, take off the kit, reassemble stock setup and re-chip. Rince and repeat this time at the testing facility and you should be good right?

That should be what, 3 gasket kits, dozens of hours of labor, 2 SC install kits, any other needed R/R hardware and maybe half a dozen tuning sessions.

Come on now Jim, aren't you up to that? How about next week maybe? Sometime before christmas please??

I guess that what is to your advantage is that there are quite a few of you in CA that are already investing the time and labor to R/R their kits every few years as it stands. Now if you could get together and invest your time in one project to get the kits to pass CARB is what is key to putting this together and making it work. Again, I am sure that there would be the $ investment of the R/R parts for the initial testing but in the long run it would make up for itself many times over in not having to reinvent the wheel. DR's kit looks and sounds like it is about as complete as it is going to get it really sounds as though he is behind on the manufacturing of them in substantial #'s right now. Even living outside the state I would be interested and willing to pay that luxury tax to see a CARB certified kit as I don't plan on living in VA forever.
