I just read thru a thread of posts from a few years ago where people were really excited about the introduction of DR's new supercharger kit.
I'm interested in exploring that idea for my 89GT, but was wondering if there is information available in one place where people have discussed the results they've had with this kit since it's introduction. It seemed from the thread that a lot of orders had been placed, what has been the general consensus in terms of performance and reliability?
The guy who maintains my 89 GT tells me that he wouldn't want to see me install such a kit as it wears too much on the engine, he talked about the pistons (I may as well confess at this point that I am completely disinclined mechanically) and other things that went straight over my head.
I'm in California, have there been people who have installed the kits and tried to get past the smog people?
Is there anyone in NoCal that is known for doing a good installation of this kit? At this point, are there other kits I should also be considering, or is the consensus that the DR version is the best?
Sorry I can't add anything to the group from a technical standpoint, I'm in awe of the knowledge that is expressed / traded on some of these threads, congratulations to everyone that makes this forum so strong. Thanks for any thoughts you can give me on the supercharger idea.

In reality there are currently only 5 versions of our system on the road. Those have turned out to be pre-production versions because of all the refinements I have done in the last year. SO you will not get a lot of feedback here on my production system... yet.
We have finalized the production version and parts are currently in the process of being manufactured. Ask your same questions again in a few months and you will get some real answers.
Feel free to call me anytime at my office if you want more details.
BTW, IMHO the guy that maintains your 89GT is WRONG :-) Seriously our standard kits run a very modest Intercooled boost at approx 7psi with a factory type tune (remapped Fuel/Igniton chips) so it will be very "safe" power for your engine.
We have finalized the production version and parts are currently in the process of being manufactured. Ask your same questions again in a few months and you will get some real answers.

In California you will have to remove the system every 2 years to get past the smog test. It will fail the visual test....unless there happens to be a "friendly" smog station you know of. That being said, there are several SC'd 928's in Norcal....Bill Ball, George Suennen, etc. Where are you located?

You will fail smog every two years......unless you live in a the rare "clean air" counties that only smog on change of ownership (I hate them!!), it sucks since most S/C kits with cats will pass the sniffer test...they just fail visual! Some guys with S/C's manage to pass without removing the kit....but they are they lucky ones!
As for supercharger kits...there are two schools of thought....the twinscrew guys (DR) and the vortech centrifugal kits (Murphy and Carl).....both are good & make plenty of power for similar prices....there is a twin turbo "kit" out there, but its not anywhere near production yet....
The only other way to make big power is to bore and stroke the engine to 6.4-6.5L known as strokers...these make huge power, & can pass smog...but are very expensive....think $20K+

Hi, thanks for the responses.
DR, sorry, I must have misunderstood the thread I read earlier or not read enough of it, I had the impression that the 928 Specialists kits were selling like hot cakes! No problem, I can (and will) wait until they're ready for more general distribution. Glad to hear my mechanic is wrong, I was kind of hoping he would be!
Rich, I live in Danville CA - but it sounds like the smog issue won't be an issue for a while if the kits aren't available yet, and is DR hinting that he's going to take care of it for us...?

My office is at El Cerro and La Gonda Way. I also see a silver and a grey in the area. That's seven or eight 928's within a few miles of here that I know of. That's a lot. I live in a town of 80,000 people (Tracy) and have never seen another one.

I understand, but keep in mind the line keeps getting longer and there is no deposit needed to get in the "line".

If DR gets CARB certification, which I find very hard to believe, he will have at least one other customer in this area - ME! My current kit will go to someone in a less militant state.

Bill, that sounds great, thanks! Sounds like the timeframe for the kits and the availability of a CARB certification are not certain at this point, but if it works out that would be great - thanks for the offer.
