Question HVAC blower squeling

Well, my blower motor is now squeling whenever the heater or A/C is running, or just the fan for that matter. It's speed sensitive, rising in pitch with the speed of the fan.

Is it possible that this could be fixed without replacement?

TIA

If your bearings need lube, then maybe... But I found that mine failed by the brushes eating the commutators away to nothing. Used ones are cheap enough & there is one on eBay right now.

I have read about lubing / oiling the motor, any information on how to do this. Mine will have a little squeelk now and then. Preventative maintenance.

Mine did the same. I had it replaced with a new one.

How big of a job is replacing the motor? I also have a vaccuum leak that makes the flapper slap happy every once in a while. Are these problems easy to fix? (Easy defined as possibly long and tedious, but w/proper instructions no problem).

The HVAC is a tight fit on the passenger side engine side of the upper firewall. Its easiest done after the hood has been removed. Good description and write up John Pirtles site.

Which 'flap' is causing problems?

Center console is where all the noise comes from. If turn fan to setting 2 or higher no flapper noise. 88 S4.

Affectionately known as the comb flap...........the actuator is under the centre console; again good write up with pics on John Pirtles site. If you can wait 'til winter you could remove the vaccum line and plug the solenoid.

Thanks, I may just have to hunt for that orange line and give it a snip and plug. But we are starting to get some winter weather here, so I figure I can always splice it back together if needs be.

Its easier to take the carpeted panel off, drivers side where you can locate the vac. line going to the actuators from the solenoids. Cut it and plug the solenoid side.........presto 'til you get to doing the console removal when cabin fever really sets in.

One can access the top bearing of the blower motor as installed: pry up the top rubber cap under the cowl and add 3-4 drops of oil.
This is far easier than removal .... which, by the way, everyone should have to do at least once - it is a rite of passage thing ....

I will try the 3 drops of oil for the squeel. Any pictures or links to walk me through the process?

Let me jump in on this - the fan on my 87 is squealing, too, at all speeds, and is driving me crazy. I'll try the oiling route (cheaper than replacing), but what kind of oil should I use?

I used motor oil ... dripped straight from the end of the dipstick: no squeals in the past 6-7 years. Remove the plastic cowl cover on the passenger side, and slip a thin screwdriver in to lift the top bearing cover. Oil away, and squirt the plug with WD-40 to help reseat it.
Full removal of the fan is a trick and a half .... hope the oil works.

If the oil doesn't work, I have a nice and quiet blower motor for $75
