Hi all,
Its been a long time since I've last posted since I've started my first year of college. I've been wrestling with the fact that my car is slowly sliding down hill. The trans is totally shot. It has a very hard time shifting into any gear and as the trans heats up and the symptoms become more severe. the engine still has a slight oil leak(which is normal [well kinda]) and a new coolant leak just after a WP replacement (hopefully a hose). I'm wondering what your thoughts are for the car. It needs paint, very light bodywork, interior improvements...etc.. So my thought is to leave the car the way it is, buy a cheap junker, and slowly dismantle it. I want to do some of the paint prep and would really love to pull the engine and rebuild it. Do you think its wise? Time and money wont really be an issue because I'm a 19 year old college guy and I've got the car for as long as I want it. SO anythoughts or suggestions?
Been there myself a great many moons ago. If I had to do it all over again I would have dumped the car and not pour money into it as it is never ending and just focus on school and career until such a point (where I'm now) where things are settled and comfortable and I have the time and resources to spend on a hobby car or two. Priorities! I wish I met myself now then.
Putting money (and time) into cars when I was a poor student was probably the worst financial decision I ever made. The smart people I knew who were working and going to school had cheap, reliable wheels and focused more on school. Some who wanted to work bought a cheap condo and came out of grad school with equity instead of debt.
Probably the most fun I had with cars were the really cheap beaters that we all bought cheap and raced, took offroad, etc. Simple, inexpensive, disposable cars and a friend with a tow strap who could keep a secret. Those were the days.
Thanks guys. I'm definately going to be looking for a cheap replacement as soon as I can. The car is currently justsitting on the driveway at my house so I'll have to see if I can convince the parents to let me keep it in the newly vacant spot. If you see any outragously good deals let me know! Thanks
Is your car a 5speed or an auto?
How much coolant are you losing?
Is that your only car? If yes, you can probably get a used toyota that gets much better milage that your 928.
The car is an auto and I was told by a local shop that the lip seals are hardening. The 928 is my only vehicle so I'm definately looking to get some junker and slowly build on the 928. I used her as a daily driver for 1 1/2 and put about 12,000 miles on the old gal, so i think its a time to give her a break. It's not that I will be made of money being a mechanical engineer, but seeing that I plan to keep the car as long as possible I have plenty of time and money to use over that time so I don't need to be in a big rush.
You said that the trans is totally shot and it has a hard time shifting into any gear. Does it mean that it's slipping when it shifts?
or is this a delay in shifting?
Is this also happening for reverse?
Is the fluid level ok?
When was the fluid changed last?
Sorry for all of the questions...I recently went through a lot of these things with my s4 automatic. It turned out to be a broken b2 piston.
