Another improvement can be had when the rear joint is replaced with something with no play, and the ball cup at the front with a heim joint.

Check the various commercial versions and see that making your own is pretty easy.

I also wonder how much of the improved feel is due to replacing a shift lever with worn tubes.
Also, comparing feel between cars is suspect as the tranny, rear coupler and front mount all come into play. Picture your car with a **** 6cm lower.

The short shifter is, in my opinion, a noticeable improvement from stock GT '91 shifter.
The throw is shorter, the stick gets a little bit lower, and the removal of the springs and new bushings removes the mushy feeling.
The shifter is now very direct and 'mechanical' in feel, heavier, especially when cold, shifts more like a sportscar should.
It still is not perfect and fast shifting in all conditions, but I think that is caused by the gear box and not the shifter.
All in all, this might be 'as good as it gets' when it comes to 928 shifting..

Sorry for the dumb question, but how do I change the shifter?
I have a short shifter from 928Int, but I can't even work out how to remove the **** from the old one.
Anything else I need to know?

Best bet is to pull the leather up and pull the rubber boot up. Underneath you'll find that two clips hold the shift lever in place. Pull those off with a hook or circlip remover. Once the shift lever is off you can then put the old lever in a vice and pull the **** off. You'll need to twist and pull to get the **** off. It's rediculous how tight it is.
Be careful not to disconnect your front ball cup when reassemblying, ask me how I know!

Does the ss affect the synchro? I have a ss installed by the PO and I cannot downshift going into a curve. I previously owned an 82 with the pos 3speed auto and I definatley prefer the stick for aggresive handling but I feel kind of weak when I am approaching a 25 mph curve at 60 mph and have to
1.use my brakes
2.fumble for second
3.grind into second
4.accelerate late.
I have no expectation of fixing myself, but I dont have a good shop that will touch a 25 yr old transmission without a complete rebuild.
Any ideas? (constructive)
