Default Short shifter install: huge improvement from stock!!

I was put off about the whole short shifter after driving an '89 a few years ago with one that was notchy and stiff. But then just recently I felt the action of Tassinari's GT with a short shifter and was stunned and amazed at how good it was.
Anyway, just did the swap this am and holy cow: short throws, more precise feel and 80% of any previous slop was gone. I cleaned and greased the pivots while they were apart.

Huge thumbs up!!!!
I thought our cars were doomed to feel like 20 year old cars with the linkage as it is, but I was wrong. I also have a new ball cup and rear coupler to do as well which should remove any remaining slop, which is minimal now.

It took me awhile to decide if I actually liked it. Dramatic change in the feel, but now I'll never go back...

I have both types in stock - 78 to 84 & 85 and up. $69.95 each. Plus shipping.

What's the difference between the 79-84 and 85 + up short shifters? I have an 84 car with an 85 (G28/ 11) tranny but otherwise everything else is stock. Which one do I need?

Thanks!

Since most 928's are around 20+ years old....chances are the shifter bushings-coupler are pretty worn to start with.....installing a short shifter and replacing both should drastically improve shift feel......or just have an auto like I do & not worry about it!

Do the aftermarket short shifters give you the equivalent of the shifter in the GT's, or is a further improvement? Would you be able to tell much difference if you put one of these in a GT?

I think the GT shifter is just shorter, but has the same pivot points. The after market ss has pivot points farther apart so that the shift **** will have to "row" less to achieve the same movement of the rod back to the tranny.
I got mine from 928 Specialists. Pics are on their site.

Changing a GT shifter to the short shifter will yield a small improvement.

For a '90 or earlier, shifting nirvana is achieved via the short shifter and upgrading the shift boot/**** to the '91+ "Fat Shifter." Carl already has the Fat Shifter. So, his impressions are based upon that combo (with new bushings.)

I have the Fat Shifter with the prototype 928Intl short shifter (don't know if the 928SP SS is exactly the same) in my '89GT and the shift action is push-button like.

BTW, Carl? Was that my '89 that was 'notchy and stiff?'

No Dave, it was a white '89 5 speed owned by Scott McDonald in CT. Very stubborn and notchy, made me like my '89 a/t even more at the time.
p.s. My ball cup was replaced already on my '87, so it isn't toast yet. Still I will be more than happy to replace it and the rear coupler.

OK, thanks. I thought it might have a little different geometry resulting in shorter throws than the stock GT shifter. And I agree, the larger **** of the 91+ is more ergonomically designed than the 90 and before.

No kidding.

The shift lever on my pickup is about 3 feet long, and it feels like a shorter throw then on my S4.

Holy cow I need to get on this.

Methinks Carl was feeeeeling my shifter at Frenzy parking lot.
Remember when Carl was re-parking my car and asked if I had a short shifter on my 88.

(PS. I've changed shift ***** now that Carl's felt my old one)
