Default 78 Second gear grinding !

If you have been following my Wide body kits for 78 and SC options on a mission Post
I need to decide to bail or plunge forward. The guy wants 3K; he is stuck on that number but second gear grinds and not sure what I would be getting into. The clutch plate seems according to the peek hole the arm is far in which means it does have meat on it still. Has anyone worked on these with min cost ?

In the new spirit of POSITIVE .....I am positive that the transmission will need a complete rebuild . The noise is from the gears grinding due to a worn syncro..the syncro makes no noise the gears do ! Once you open up the box it is $2,000 - 3,000 to get it back to working as designed plus R and R ... later boxes do not work with the existing torque tube so that option becomes expensive.

while I agree the box most likely has syncro issues, I think your cost est is a wee bit high there JB, course you are on the west coast

Depends on how rebuilt you want the rebuilt to be ...just a new syncro might make it better but how about some dog teeth , and a slider ,maybe the reverse gears are a little beat up , the input bearing might be suspect and, and, and....nearly 1/2 of the core early boxes we get in are considered beyond rebuilding . We save the remaining good parts and trash the rest.

I agree, but giving a high end estimate initially is negative, most of the boxes we see can be rebuilt for $12-1500

You east coast guys have all the luck. I haven't seen anything that $1200 dollars would rebuild for the last 10 years. Most of the boxes we are seeing have been apart and "patched" more than once. "Rebuilding" one has gotten very expensive. As labor rates have skyrocketed, $1200 for a rebuild doesn't leave much room for parts....which have gotten very expensive.

There some possiblity that a the short stub shaft the the clutch rides on could be worn. Also could be a little air in the clutch master. Either one will make it shift poorly and (on at least two cars) 2nd seems to get notchy first.

having recently done this I would say that starting with a decent box (an assumption at best), a rebuild can be had for under 1500 IF- you do most of the work yourself. If you are willing to drop and re-install the box yourself, I know of 2 sources that charge about $400 for rebuild labor plus the cost of parts. This route is not for everyone and I can't attest to the build quality or thoroughness.... I just know the sources exist and a couple of guys seemed to do OK with it.

If you plan on dropping the car off and piching it up complete, even Jim's estimate might be low depending on where you go.

my 79 did this. However it was really calmed down with royal purple. it also was fine after it was warmed up. this was a cheap and easy fix for a car that was driven less than 3000 miles a year. If it is going to be a DD you may want to fix it right. My estimates came in at $1500.00 with a parts cost of about $5-$700, if i wanted to do it myself.

You know when the input bearing on 5th gear the primary big front bearing part # 928 302 152 05 is about $500....dog teeth are a couple hundred each The shift sleeve is $300 and there are more than one....syncros are $ 80-90 each and you really should do more than just 2nd gear. And as I said many of the CORE boxes we get in exchange need gear sets... first and second gear sets are normally $2,000-$3,000 NEW , I do have a great deal on some new 1983-1984 , 1-2 gears sets for $995 until they are GONE , note this includes the dog teeth ! When I have several invoices on my desk which show what it cost us to have boxes rebuilt the labor charge for the bench work is less than 1/3 the cost. I am POSITIVE that rebuilding a 928 transaxle easily can be more than $1,200-1,500 even if the LABOR is FREE. Besides if you do NOT give a HIGH initial estimate how do you handle the call to the customer when THEIR transmission just happens to need more parts ??? The back half of the car is gutted , car is on the lift (it is not going anywhere) ,the transmission is scattered on the work bench in about 100 pieces and THEN it needs some gears/bearings ? What choice does the customer have at that point ? I think most people might be pleased if their bill ended up being LOWER than they planned rather than HIGHER. In fact I am positive about that. There is a recent long thread from a guy in Florida who spent $2,700 to a shop to rebuild his S-4 five speed it was not right and he then pulled it out and has documented how poorly the job was done ! I get calls from shops all the time who are needing lots and lots of parts for their customers transaxles .... Our customer base is now nearly 60,000 contacts no one on Earth deals with as many 928 owners ,shops ,dealers as we do ...no one.
