I used to drive my 914 1000 miles each way home from college. Sometimes with 3 people! The 928 is a lot more comfortable. And these days the power is important too. I did my distance 914ing in the days of the 55 speed limit, which ment people drove between 60 and 75, which is where the 914 is comfortable. These days on the I5 through the central valley you can be doing 100 + and people are passing you all over the place. I was never comfortable in my 914 at these speeds, but the 928 is right at home. One thing to watch out for: as you transition from a 914 you will have so much more power (even in an 16v car) that you will feel like you can do anything. Watchout- power tends to corrupt.
I really loved all seven of my 914s, and also my 928s, so I have compromised with my 928 cab.

It looks great....cork interior. I went with Roger to p/u in the Bay Area and drove it home 1800 miles without a hitch.

Hmm it'll be a few weeks I think. I was thinking in the 5-7K range. I'd like to get a later example of the earlier body style (if that makes sense)

Mark has said it well. The 928 is a cross country driver, not a grocery getter or autocrosser. (though mine does those other things fairly well also!!) And it is a great camp-mobile. Drive it across this USA and smile all the while. Stop at a KOA and pitch your tent and you'll wonder at the space under the hatch. My 914 served very well as a camp-mobile because of the two luggage compartments, but the 928 is even better. One day recently, I spent the entire day in LA partly at the gym, and then wandering around a park with a nice lady, then on to dinner which we spent at leisure. I left LA that evening at around 8 pm and made it to Sunnyvale 3 1/2 hours later (only because I deliberately followed slower cars to avoid the bugs and critters at night on I-5). After arriving at Sunnyvale, I sat up another 2 or 3 hours watching DVDs on my big screen because I wasn't tired and couldn't fall asleep. 928s are like that. Long distances at relatively brisk sustained speeds without fatigue. Just remember to allocate more of your budget for rear tires.

Yup, that's how it always starts. It doesn't happen with any other Marque, but science has proven, 928 owners are CHOSEN. We don't know by whom, we don't know how. But the first sign is always, 'The Dream'. The important thing now is to not fight the process. Everything may seem random to you now. But in six months when your cruisin' down the road in your 928, it will hit you, everything happened in a planned orderly fashion.
I'm tellin' ya, it gives me goose bumps every time I see it happen.

Hit...you need to go for it. I went all in back in April and don't regret it. I was driving nearly new VW Passat and hated every minute of it. Now I make excuses to drive. Store run for a stick of butter...no prob..want me to drive to lunch..I'm parked right out front. Sure clutches cost $2k and alignments are $300 but who cares when you have permagrin.

I better plant that money tree. If there are any gettogethers around here in north california I wouldn't mind knowing about it.
Maybe I'll just 'casually' look at some. Maybe put some things I own know up for sale. With no reason behind it at all.
