Default Cam swap?

Will 83S Euro cams swap directly into an 83S US motor?

For a refresher both motors are 4.7L 16-valve motors.

TIA

Direct swap but you won't get 60 hp. For that you'd need the TB, Spider with larger runners, better flowing heads with larger valves plus you'd have to learn to speak German..

You will feel a difference. Saw a magazine write up that put the Euro cams in a US with the TB and headers (Stock US heads). They got around 285hp.

A local 928 did just this. At first he only changed the cams because one of the originals broke. His comments were that overall hp didn;t change at all but what did change was that the power band was shifter up by about a 1000 rpms. So low end torque went down and about the same was gained in the higher rpms. In every day driving this made his car feel slower than before. In racing conditons, this is good casue the engine is kept near redline anywas.

euro intake and euro cams on US heads brought it from 200rwhp to 243rwhp. (fuel regulator optimizing fuel went from 232 to 243rwhp)
I believe i was the first to do this mod back in '97.

So what's the exact diff in the us and euro heads besides valve size? Are they the same heads just cast with a different port shape and size? If that were the case either head would have the same potential with some skilled porting...

yes, just 2mm larger intake and exhaust valves and 1/10" or a little more, larger ports. the other main difference is combustion chamber size. 54cc compared to the high compression 10:1 euro heads at 48cc.

The bigger euro cams bleed off compression at lower rpms, so you need a higher compression ratio to compensate. The published figures for the '83 4.7 are US 9.3:1, vs. euro 10:1.

My lil' ol' '81 makes some heavy duty torque, but only for a about 1000 rpm. The '86 makes torque for almost 3000 rpm, which shows that it can breathe properly. When I get around to putting bigger '79 cams in the '81, I'll probably end up advancing them a touch.

my dyno runs showed no gains in torque, in fact, torque stayed the same (peak torque) and hp went up from 200 to 243rwhp. with the cam and intake change.
