Post Post your SITM Videos here

Here is a 7 meg (quality compromise for dial-up and BB users) video from Friday on the BRP. Could be Tarek and Eric but I reall couldn't leagally say for sure

Legal Disclaimer: This video has been enhanced with magic speed fairy dust. The actual P-cars in this video never went faster than the posted speed limit at any time, for any reason. Other cars seen in this video have been slowed down (ain't technology great?) to give the illusion that the P-cars are going faster

Right-click and save to your computer then play back form your hard drive. Or, double-click on and buffer

Dr. Ernie,

As much as Tarek may wish it was burning rubber , it's burning oil.

Tarek has a problem which appears to be a oil leak which throws oil on the exhaust when climbing hills and taking fast corners. I thought it was from the exhaust under WOT, but the video shows in rolling out from under the car on the passenger side too. I'm not sure where it's originating from. That's one I would like to chase down if I had the car.

It was odd to be on a national park road, surrounded by lot's of protected green living things and watching the red car fog the entire roadway with burning oil! Notice there is a part of the video where I move up behind the black car. Courtesy of Tarek, who moved over as opposed to killing us with burn oil smoke. (My kid threw up all over the car shortly thereafter, but I re-assured Tarek that he did not cause that to happen

cough, cough...looked like fun.

Tarek needs new cam tower seals before we name a hole in the ozone layer after him!

Mark,

I should have taken a pic of the setup. It's now been pulled out.

I used a 1" color CCD board camera mounted to the visor with tie-wraps. The camera could swivel on it's mount for fine-adjusting. It was real close to the driver's perspective and eliminated the annoying rear-view mirror being in the shot.

A lapel mic was under the hood (lot's of air noise there, will be improved next time).

The camera and mic ran to a 8mm Z-box recorder. I can get 4 hours on LP and 2 hours on SP. Tape ran the whole time I was driving. I recorded the entire drive down, the SITM stuff and the drive home.

I used power from one of those 12V portable jumpstart thingies with built-in lighter plug. The car's electrical system was throwing alt. whine into the audio and a bit of noise into the video. Tha camera is happier at 12V than 14V anyway and the jumpstart device has enough supply to power the cam and recorder for a month. Plus, I could jump someone's car if they needed help. Hey, if that puppy's heart stopped, the jumpstart device would have been worth a try (see "When my SITM trip went to the dogs" thread).

Shane,

Thanks.

928 specialists cat-bypass, stock center mufflers, brand-new stock rear muffler. No leaks.

Just pulling the cats dramatically changes the sound for the better.

With the mic under the hood, at WOT, your'e hearing the same intake sound we used to get by turning the air cleaner lid over in the old big-block chevys.

I like that. Nice setup. It gives a better sensation of the speeds traveled than my clips will. I still have one more thing to try later on this summer.

I'll be posting some soon.

It's worst after throttle aplication after coasting or slowing down. Looks like valve guides maybe?

Ernest,

I agree, Eric D. and I had a discussion about that. The gerneral conclusion is oil leak, but I noticed the same thing as you. As I said, I'd like to troubleshoot that one.

Greg,

That engine sounds sweet, were you manually shifting the transmission.

Hi Steve,

I had the selector in third most of the time for a bit of dynamic braking and let the kickdown switch take me to second at WOT. Hence, the bog and shift delay. I "needed" 4th occasionally on a couple of long straights

If you focus on the audio, you may hear the shift quality (firmness) you and I were discussing. I tended to feather the throttle soon after the shift to third, as the road and traffic ahead dictated.

Greg,
On further ovservation it lasts too long for valve guides. Could he be pulling oil out of the crankcase under certain vacuum conditions? It only seems to happen at, if not WOT, then at near WOT. Under less than heavy acceleration it doesn't happen.
