Default A few laps around Spokane Raceway Park

Just got back from the PacNW 928 Track Attack and got a chance to do a quick video of a few laps around the circuit.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...72792423797091

Still figuring out the whole in car video thing. I do need to make a mount that hold the camera higher. The bungee cord/tripod on the tranny hump just doesn't cut it. Kind of sucks having to look through the wipers to see the track, but, better than nothing.

It sure would be nice to get some more of our 928 brothers up for this event. As can be seen, you can literally get out on the track and have practically no other traffic, or you can go out with a group of friends and dice it up.

Thanks for sharing. I mounted a camera higher up on my last DE day, better view of the track but had the rear view mirror in the middle of the screen showing my ugly mug the whole time. Need some better ideas on how to mount a camera, and where in these cars.

A roll cage Adam, the $99.00 for the camera mount.. Out of all the track event I've ever done, Spokane is certainly the best - unlimited track time, the longest straight in N. America, lots of 928's... and watching Tom M. - Why is his hood alway up?

Glad is was a safe event! How did Louie's car run?

Gee..you noticed that did you????? yea..had a great half of the day....ran great in the morning, drove hard...getting into the groove, when just before lunch I went into turn two a little hotter than normal, did my 5 to 3 shift there and didn't quite rev match..so engine did some braking and the tbelt light came on...coasted around turn two..engine still running..but light won't cancel. Get back to pits and figure out that it was the tensioner again...one bolt gone..one bolt sheared off and one holding the tensioner in place...belt was way loose..and couldn't quite tell if teeth had jumped..

got the front apart, picked up one new bolt (put some blue loctite on it this time) retensioned..checked timing..drivers side cam off by 5 teeth...reset cam timing..retension...put it all back together...and viola...just in time to make the drive home...performed flawlessly for the 5 hour drive home..

Happened before two years ago..tensioner almost fell off on way over to track... as a side note...one bolt on the tensioner has been gone since i got the car...broken off inside the block and couldnt get it out easily..but the three I have had in there in the mean time have held for two plus year... I think the common bond here is engine braking (last time I used the kick start method to get car restarted on the fly when it would go to 4 cly mode due to 30lb inj. and turbo system) this time...hard engine braking in turn two..

Dodged another bullet this time..no bent valves..and was able to drive home under my own power.....

All in all a good track event...but I'll be digging into this bolt backing out thing soon...hopefully the loctite will cure it..

Later,
Tom

How did Louie's car run?
The car ran great, it just didn't stop good enough for the instructor.

Louie decided to be prudent and have an instructor take him around in the stroker before he attacked the track himself. Really not necessary, Louie's driven the track many times before, I think he just wanted more experienced hands to take the car around so he could learn from the passenger seat. The car sounded great but pulled into the pits after two laps. Instructor wasn't happy with the brakes. I checked the pedal and it was a little soft. I could apply the brake (engine running) and get a firm pedal about and inch and a half down, she'd hold for a couple seconds, then drop another half inch.

Chris Ford had a spare Master cylinder back at his home, but we didn't have the correct tools trackside to do the swap. It was a total bummer.

.....is your stroker running?
Hey Brian,
Nope not yet. Hopefully the scenery will be moving by much faster with the new motor. I actually got a call from my machinest on the way out to Spokane that my crank, rods, pistons, and flywheel are all ready to be picked up after balancing. I'm picking them up today, and now that I have my pistons back, I can send the block to Wisconsin to get nikasiled. Getting closer, hopefully I'll have short block before winter.

Don't get me started Chuck, I've got enough projects I'm chasing down right now. There is no way you are missing the next Track Attack. When conditions are perfect, there is no points lead that can even compare.

Ok Tom, now maybe I can come to Spokane the next trip - I thought I was the jinx for your car. 1st time it was the beer run and timing belt, then it was the tensioner.

Adam - you do need to get started on the track car - if you don't get on the race track soon - I'll be able to use my age as an excuse for you beating me..

Get to it man!

So Louie, I hope you took lots of pics of your post track day tour to Idaho, back through Washington, and finally to Oregon, to send to the instructor to show that the brakes were not a concern.

Y'know Adam, I was trying to be philosophical about the whole incident when I was at the track. Afterward, I got pretty steamed even though I'm not supposed to do that. I'm mostly over it now. I've developed some new rules for myself. 1) Never let a non-928 qualified instructor drive my car. 2) I'm probably as good of a judge of what the car and myself is capable of as anyone else. 3) My plan was to go at the track gradually to test the limits of me and the car, and I should have stuck with that plan. Being an irresponsible 17 yr old passed me by 50 yrs ago.

The term "It's all for safety" is only to stroke the ego of some control driven deviant person, and I think I found one.

Anyway, It didn't matter much in the end because I got to visit with my friends at Spokane, and was able to spend some time with Harvey in Moscow, ID. Harvey is a remarkable multi talented guy. Very interesting visit.

The drive from Clarkston WA, to Enterprise, OR. is an absolute blast. That's on WA highway #129 and I think OR #3. I didn't miss a thing not going on the track. Diving into and zooming back out of those very deep canyons is about as exciting as it gets. Very winding, very steep, few guardrails, and several thousand feet down, for many miles, and hardley any other traffic. A few huge pickups festooned with gun racks & rifles going as fast as they could. The rolling hills through wheat farms is good for high speed sweepers too.

Oh yes. The brakes worked fine.

I got it figured out. If a guy has a girlfriend he's thinking about maybe a long term affair with, take her on that run. If she pukes and wants out of the car, let her go. If she hangs in there and doesn't come down with a headache that evening, she's a keeper. Chris hung on tight and admired the scenery. Afterward, I complimented her on being a good sport on the drive and she said I'd pay for it sometime in the future. We stayed at the Wallowa lake lodge, one of the most beautiful places on earth. It's very undeveloped unlike poor Cour D'Alene which is getting developed out of existence.

Adam,

Looks like you had fun at the track, sorry to hear about Louie's experience (I think his evaluations
are correct).

On the video, I kept trying to raise my head to see over the dash/hood to see the road, that and
look around the windshield wipers. I guess you need to raise the camera and take off the wiper
blades, that and get rid of that rattling sound. At least overdub some good music. I know video
is one of the low priority things when you get to the track, but afterwards it's a good tool to learn
from and show others. Anyway, don't want to rag on you too much, I just want to be able to enjoy
better videos the next time you go out. Keep them coming. Thanks.
