Post Aftermarket paint? What kind to use?

Hello everyone,

I'm going to have my car completely painted by a general autobody shop that has done other work for me before. I have a sweet deal with them for work they do for me and although they could supply paint, this deal would be best if I supply the paint, so I can choose the quality.

Couple of points-

This will be a color change. I will strip most of the non-paintable items from the body to save them time and help reduce the taping-off of the car. They will do ding touch-up and metal prep, then spray the finish.

I have not settled on a color yet. The car has tan seats and dark brown dash/trim. Carpet is the lighter grey-beige (looks tan).

I'm thinking of choosing hunter green or maybe a deep chinese red (not fire engine, more like maroon sort-of) or maybe even a goldish tan.
(cast your vote here!)

So, what sort of primer and paint should I be looking at?

Thanks in advance,

Greg

Lots of color considerations here: <a href="http://www.landsharkoz.com/colourstart.htm" target="_blank">http://www.landsharkoz.com/colourstart.htm</a>

My car was done at Paint Masters in Rockville, MD in 1999 by the PO before he sold it to me. He said he paid about 4k. It was a color change from the factory Copper Brown Metallic to Midnight Blue Metallic (see avavtar). After i bought it i called them to find out what they used so i could get the right wax for it. He told me they use a Sherwin Williams Ultra 7000 basecoat/clearcoat system. They did all the prepwork. However they did'nt completely strip the car down to bare metal. They fixed the dings and prepped the surface for new paint. I understand that not stripping to bare metal is a good thing on Porsches, cant remember why. However the painter told me that if I paint it again it will need to be stripped of all the old paint layers. The next job (if there is a next job) is gonna be a pricy one....

Thanks DG84S,

Good site. I probably will have to stray from a factory color to get what I want. Are there any special considerations on type of paint to use due to the aluminum, steel and plastic panels on the 928? I'm going to ask the body shop who's doing the work, but I would like the 928 community's opinion on paint type.

Thanks again,
Greg

Oh i forgot to add that included in the $4k jbob were the underside of the hood, hatch and all the door jambs too. They basically disassembled the car and the interior where necessary.

My personaly fav is Moss Green, followed by Oak Green, the black or red.

My wife's minivan is "Inferno Red" which is a very dark metallic red, almost burgandy or maroon.

It's a 2001 Chrysler Town and Country minivan, that's the only red color they offered, and I think that color would be nice on a 928. It's a pretty common color, you should check it out.

Thanks John,

The Ultra 7000 seems to be a popular paint. The shop did my suburban with that a couple of years ago and it has held up nicely. I guess the hardest part of a color change is dealing with (or ignoring) the engine compartment area.

Kblair,

The Chrysler red is the style red that I like. Green intrests me because of the brown/tan interior and the few number of green 928's I've seen. Maybe even a dark metallic green that could appear black at night.

The moss green does look black at night, but I'm not sure if it's metallic or not. Would look sweet with a tan/brown interior.

I'm going to e in Howard Co. MD for a few months starting in March, are you close to there?

you might go down to metal in spots to get the dings if they're bad enough, but you don't want to strip the car. the factory base coat will be far superior to anything a body shop will do. sand the paint, spray a sealer, then paint.

paint: Glasurit.

Just a quick comment - if the car is stripped, it primer must be compatible with aluminum. I've "heard" some bad stories of using the wrong primer.

Paint it purple and invite Nicole over to covet it.

I work in Columbia. I bet thats where you'll be.

Greg

Here is how they handled the engine compartment.

<img src="http://members.rennlist.com/blueshark/Engine6.jpg" alt=" - " />

You have to look at the driverside strut tower to see the original color, but the compartment is so jammed tight with stuff that its hard notice at a glance. If the original car color were lighter and brighter it would probably be more noticable.

You cant see it in this pic, but the area where the light bar is and the washer fluid reservior gos is also re-painted too.
