Post Limited Slip Differential

Hi

I am an 87" automatic with 2.54 open differential. Does anyone make a limited slip for that car or do I have to go with factory? Thanks,

Tommy

Did you have the differential replaced, or is your 928 a Euro? I don't know for sure, but I thought the 87MY came with a 2.20 differential. YMMV.

Anyway, there once was an aftermarket manufacturer for 928 LSD, but I haven't seen an ad for it for some time. To the best of my knowledge (which is not too good as of late) there's now just the Porsche LSD. 928 International can probably get you a used/rebuilt one for less than a new one.

Hi Tommy,

There was a bit of a discussion prompted by Kim Crumb about getting Quaiffe to build a lsd for the 928, but he needed a minimum number of orders and thus could not get enough people interested....I think the cost would have been near the same as buying a used one from 928 Intl...somewhere around $1200.

So where did you find an 87 with the 2.54 rear?..most have 2.2's. Unless of course yours is Euro.?..

Also, where are you in Seattle...we have quite a group of 928er's up here...

good luck finding a solution...

Ed,

The differential was replaced with a 2.54 ratio.

One of the reason I want an LSD is because while existing a corner I experience inside wheel spin. I am not sure if I can eliminate this problem with a big front bar or not, like the Devak Super Bar? My car already has Eibach and Bilstein. What do you think?

Thanks,
Tommy

I had that problem with the 86.5 928S. I also went with a stiffer and adjustable anti-swaybar, and it did not help. I then went to stiffer springs and Koni shocks. They help in other ways, but the inside tire would still spin when I got on the power too soon for the unloaded inside wheel to handle.

Ultimately, I solved the problem by getting a 90GT with a PSD. ;^) My autocross times improved, but my expenses went up! :^( YMMV.

Hi Tom,

I would be interested in the Quaiffe for $1200. Please let me know if we are serious about getting Quaiffe to do a limited production run.

My car is a California model. The previous owner installed the 2.54 rear end.

I am up in Lynnwood. I use to be on your list but I didn't have enough time to read all the email and I dropped out. May be I need to sign up again.

Hi, Tommy.

One option is to get a used LSD and install it. I went this route with my '86.5 and replaced the synchros while we were in there (still within wear tolerance, but close to the limit). Labor was 11 hours for "overhaul/install/reshim LSD, R&R transmission, replace synchros." Parts, after discount, came to $755 (excluding fluid). Roughly $404 of the parts cost was specific to replacing the synchros. Used LSD bought separately for $1,000. (You do the math. )

Leif (Autowerks Northwest) did the work for me.

See you at Pacific Raceway?

Hi Curt,

Thanks for the info. I like Leif's prices. I will ask Leif to work on my car also.

I am not sure if I will make it to driver ed this year but if I do I will be driving my 944 "race car". I am still learning on how to drive an automatic correctly so no 928 for awhile. Of course I will visit with the Sharks drivers )

Hi again,

I was really hoping the quaiffe deal came together when I only had my 87..but not enough takers (on the rennlist). I have a 89 GT now with factory LSD...so no further interest on my part...but I will keep an eye out for any parts cars...

Glad to hear you found our list...there are also digest mode and web only mode where you don't get all the messages, but can browse freely....so not so much clutter.

I'm up in Snohomish...(actually Mill Creek) so I'm just up the road from you...what color is your 928? I'll keep an eye out...

All mine are black/black :-)

Later,
Tom

P.S. You should think about our Spokane Track attacks..(twice a year) April and Sept. A whole day at the track with primarily 928s...and lots of fun.

Leif did a lot of work on the car that time, more than just the tranny/diff, and as I recall felt sheepish about handing me such a big bill. So, in reality, the parts costs won't reflect the 10% discount. On the other hand, he charged me less for synchros than at least one of the big 3 vendors.

Do stop by and say hi at PR--I'll be there in my red S.

I didn't pursue it.

I did bother to look up the differences between the two types, with respect to driving style (autox vs. track), but it was last summer and I don't remember the first thing about what folks said. I suspect I was doubtful that my driving skills really warranted one or the other.

Of course, if one autocrosses or races the original LSD part may be the only strictly legal option. So I went with the used (refreshed) LSD. Which is really why I don't remember squat about the torsen diffs.

Tom - My car is rock green (grayish green) with white interior and chromed stock wheels. The same color 928 is shown on page 17 in the December 2002 Spiel magazine. It also sits a little lower than stock and it has a RMB. See you around.

Curt - Thanks for the tip on Guard Transmission. I will check them out.

Tommy
