Default Oil Plug Magnet Lost

Interesting, there is a first time for everything .... so, on one of my cars, I drained oil this morning to discover the oil drain plug magnet is ...... missing. So, where is it? Presumably not on the crank, perhaps the oil pickup mesh .... I see very little by way of metal when I snake my magnet around, and the filter is clean as a baby's breath. Thank Goodness for that.

So wouldn't another magnet just repel it ?

Are you going to try to get it out of there? I assume you already checked the oil that you drained.......that IS a new one Heinrich.

Nope, it isn't in there. So, snaking a magnet into the engine also revealed nothing. Not sure what I should do .... Not really in the mood to open th engine, and wondering if the magnet in there would pose a threat. Who knows how long it's been in there.

Might be the dumb question of the day. Are you sure there was one? Maybe somewhere along the line a non-magnet drain plug was installed?

The old oil was probably tossed but did you try and pass a magnet through the goop?
If there was fuzziness that meant the magnet got trashed.
Ferrous magnets are pretty brittle and don't take well to being abused.

Just a spurious thought.

I vote for Enzo's explaination.

do you need a new pan gasket if so now is the time to do it, I hope that you find the magnetic plug if you do it will probably be stuck to the oil pickup or possibly the level sensor , those are the only things that it might stick to, if it is stuck to these parts then it probably wont do much harm as its not going anywhere, it doesnt seem possible that it would have gotten thrown up into the crank if it did it will probably be cast off back into the oil pan, if its stuck on the oil pickup it will be collecting metal deposits and might cause a part of the pickup to be clogged but not by much

Not unless you have one of those quantum physics bending double north pole magents

it probably is in the same place that my couple of teeth from the cam sprockets on the holbert car. they are probably in the pick up screen and there they will stay.
