Default TB/WP replace or not yet? Opinions

Water pump, timing belt, tensioner rebuilt - the whole deal was done in late 2001. So, it's been 5 1/2 years and only 23,000 miles. Tension was checked a year ago and was fine.

Is it time to do it or can it wait???

I'm not going to do the work myself but I definitely will be getting a new radiator and new tires before the rainy season. All that adds up to a lot of $$$ at one time.

Time to do the TB or let it go until early next year???

I'm leaning toward checking the tension & tensioner and if it looks good, letting it go for at least another year. Just want to get the experts opinions. Now in six months, we could have a "Parting out an '87" thread...

Joe:

If you can come over to the East Bay some day, I'd be glad to check the tension and scrutinize the belt and other parts. Most weekends are open except for the next 2. Also, we do have timing belt parties on occasion in the Norcal area. You provide some refreshments and we all get dirty together. Takes about 8 hours.

That's a very generous offer and I'd love to have you check the tension and check the belts. My weekends are busy until the middle of September also. We'll see what happens in the next few weeks. If I get a few days off in a week or two, I might have the car in the shop for new tires and a new radiator so maybe I'll just bite the bullet and have everything done.

I'm available weekdays too if you want to drop by - being unemployed has it's benefits.
