1. The water pump is broken and I discovered that it has been ten years since the last TB/WP replacement.

2. While I believe I could fix this, it would take me months to do, given work and family commitments. I want to drive the car while there's still some fun driving weather.

So I am having the local Porsche dealer do the work. :takingitupthechute:

The car will be ready next Monday. To offset the cost of the repairs, I am offering to wash your car for you. And vaccuum. And put one of those scented cardboard trees that hang from your rear view mirror ($1 extra)

Cost is $10.

In order to pay off the repairs, I only need 290 of you to participate.

OUCH.....$2900 for a TB/WP....that hurts...since parts are "only" $400 or so depending on what is needed!

Ouch x 2! Wow. I'm going to need that soon and since I'm not going to do the work myself, I'm not looking forward to what it's going to cost me but I doubt $2,900.

Upgrade to Kens tensioner system; parts costs are one belt, Kens bracket and kit, the Audi roller lever and hydraulic tensioner as well as 3 nights of your time.

For $2900 you'd get 6 cars done

Well.......belt, water pump and lets assume for Tim's sake all rollers are going to be more than $400.

New pump "list" price is at least $300. At the dealer you know he's getting charged full list. I'm guessing the parts on this bill are close to $1,000 based on Porsche List prices.

Either way.........you now know what it feels like to take a shower in the pen

Sorry to hear about the WP but if this failure precluded the belt failure sure to come you are money ahead.

I would recommend a TB/WP party but I also have commitments that would not solve your time crunch.

Man - for that kind of $$$ for a TB/pump, you could save 50% by covering it in stamps and have USPS send it here .... no leak warranty included!

I confess that when I saw cupfuls of coolant spewing from the pump, I hastily decided to take the car into the Porsche Exchange; I didn't want the pump to seize. That haste put me in what might be a bit of a compromised situation.

Honestly, I was expecting the price to be at or above $2K. The posted labor rate is $160/hr.
But if the parts are less than $1K, then I have to wonder how much time the shop really needs to do this work. I know it is an involved process, but $1900 in labor seems like a load.

Following my posting of this, I called Hacker (Enzo now that he's in the witness protection program for a crime HE committed) to get his thoughts on the price tag. His suggestion is to check on their parts source(s) and ask for a detailed bill. This I will surely do.

Also, following further thought, I will Armor-All your tires for $275.

Thanks for the feedback so far - it is helping gain a clearer sense of the matter.

you be gettin reamed... even if it's $1000 in parts that's $1900 labor!!!!!!!
our local Pcar dealer is at $112/hr, that would be 17 hours!! you're paying for some newbie to learn 928s so the 911/boxster guys don't have to mess with it and can lay the blame off on the "kid" if it gets screwed up
for half of that labor cost I'll fly up there for the weekend and teach YOU how to do it yourself

It's been that labor rate there for a good while already. If I remember correctly, their Audi rate is a little cheaper, at $150/hour. Not sure what the book time for a timing belt water pump is, but add to that the new parts that they may consider part of the job, and it adds up quick. Have you checked the price of a new belt tensioner lately? FYI, that's the "Risky Business" Porsche dealership, but in a new building since the movie was made.
