I did do the measure, the Cayenne engine is indeed tall, you would definately have to modifiy the sump, we have a very good sump when it comes to sitting the engine low in the chassis, not much good in other departments though. The turbos will need ditate the need for an entire new exhaust system including manifolds.

The intake was touch and go, I did the measure on a car in the dealers workshop, if the engine was out I could be more certain, I would bet it would fit, it's going to be tight! I was offered a turbo engine for about $15K, the turbo is the way to go as the is stronger too. I was looking at it for a weight saving and positioning advantage, set the engine further back as it is more compact, I think the turbo engine weighed 232 kgs? Can't be sure it is a while ago now, just before I decided to go back to 2 valve technology, now that is bit a laugh isn't it.

While a Cayenne or other Porsche engine transplant into the 928 would be attractive to most Porschephiles, experience has already proven that (if you're determined to build a 928 "streetrod") a hot Chevy engine could be made to fit in more easily....and the same HP could be attained...cheaper.

I think it's important to return to the original question which as you can see above has not a single question about cost. So H2 and others, the question is, can it be done? I think the answer is yes.

I've been watching this thread. Pretty interesting.

The Gen-1 Cayenne V-8 has 340HP. The Gen-2 with direct injection is ~380HP.

You can easily mod a Turbo to 550+

Yes it does have a dry sump. It was designed this way so extreme off-roading (inclines) could be achieved.


Another thing to look at are the brakes. My 5000# truck stops way better than my old '81 928. I know it's not a fair comparison, but the front calipers are HUGE.

I must say I never thought that the question I prompted would cause such a debate. I must say that at the current time I don't see myself being able to pull anything of this magnitude off anytime soon. That being said I merely prompted the question because well I'm 18 and I've got more ideas for the car then I have appendeges! What I think owning a 928 or any car like it is about is having it the way you want it (as long as its in good taste!). If you love your stock 79' or a blown S4 then so be it! What I would personally love to see is the envelope being pushed a little more. I think we're headed in the right direction with people like Mark Kilbort, Carl Faust, and Tim Murphy doing what they have I just hope it builds on itself so that more options become availible in the future.
Whoever said I should put a Chebby in my 928 needs to get their head checked. Thats like saying put a damn truck engine in a super car and then putting it back in a truck!!!......oh wait they already did that EXAMPLE: Dodge Viper. I hope you think about you said.

Nevertheless, a few folks have put Chevy engines into their 928 and I think Malibu has the nicest of the bunch.

Pushrods or not, an LS series Chevy motor in a 928 is a major upgrade. More powerful and lighter.
