Sorry about the website being down, we had a transformer explode behind our building last night and the UPS only lasted a couple of hours. Back up and running now.

The plan is to manufacture the gauge faces from Stainless steel and rely on the existing lighting in the instrument cluster for illumination. We have considered some kind of Indiglo type backlighting, but I was trying to avoid the "Honda Civic look". However, if there is enough interest in things that glow, we can do that too although it will undoubtably take a little longer.

Regards

Does anyone know whether it's possible to create these updated gauges so that they don't have the unsightly "holes" for the warning lights? The only solution I can think of is to have black gauge faces that have illuminated markings. That way, if holes have to remain to allow the warning lights to shine through, they won't stand out nearly as much.

I want to update my dash gauges but not with something that looks like it doesn't belong there.

Any thoughts?

The black gauge faces with illuminated markings is what I think I'd prefer. The problem is that the gauge needles wouldn't be illuminated. Unless you kept the stock gauge lighting too, you wouldn't see the needles at night. If you came up with a way to put on illuminated plastic needles, the gauges would all have to be recalibrated because of the difference in the weight of the needles.

The stock gauge illumination is with three bulbs that provide light through triangular shaped plastic pieces. There's a chrome like coating on those plastic pieces that's supposed to reflect the light to the gauge faces. Apparently it's pretty common for that reflective coating to be in poor condition due to age. Mine sure was. I removed the old coating and painted those plastic triangles with Alclad 2 from a local hobby shop. It's paint that loooks just like chrome. It is not the same as any of the other chrome spray paint you've probably seen before.

Another alternative is to buy a new instrument cluster housing. They're around $80 brand new. I was pretty surprised at how bright the stock gauge illumination system is on a car with those plastic triangles in good condition.

They got the gauges I sent them! They will put them on their web site late today or in the morning. There are many options for our gauges. They will start with the standard U.S. "mph" and later they will add the "km". I have been sending them the different versions of our gauges (alot). For the white gauges, they will need to have the cut holes for the warning lights. This is because most years are different (over 22 options for the warning lights alone!). For those of you who only want the numbers to light up, your are in luck! They will offer the REVERSE INDIGLO ones. For those of you who don't know what they look like, they can be found in these cars: New Mercedes S Class, Lexus LS 400 and RX 300, and new Cadillacs. They have a very high tech look at night. Only the numbers will light up at night. You can get these in white faces or black faces. -With the black faces, the holes for the warning lights will not be evident-. You can get the numbers to light up in different colors. Red (like the new Audis), Blue (like VWs), Yellow and Pure White. On the black ones, you can still add designs. Here is a picture of "REVERSE INDIGLO GAUGES" (not Porsche) at night. These are on white gauges but remember, they can be had in Black Gauges also...for that "Factory Look".

I don't really like the idea of something that distracts a person from "WATCHING THE ROAD". Be a shame to CRASH your shark cuz you were eyeballing your gauges.

Yep, I agree. The stock cluster looks dated.

I don't intend taking anything away from these electro-luminescent jobbies (actually they quite nice), just thought I'll post an alternative...

I had mine done by a local speedo shop in white vinyl overlay that spruced the cluster up just tastefully. The vinyl is thin enough for the warning lights to shine through even in bright sun.

For a before & after impression, compare this pic to Steve C's earlier post.

Just thought I'll suggest an alternative.

Regards,
Pierre.

This keeps getting better and better. They are also going to make the Aluminum and Carbon Fiber Bezels for our cars. These should be done before the month is up. They will fit all 78-88 model year 928s. The will also be economical. About $20-30 and it's even cheaper if we do a group buy. They will look the same as the ones in jageng.com but without the high price.

The 928 packages are on their web site now! Order your pre-orders at web page

Remember, your credit card won't be billed until all 20 orders have been taken. You can design your faces at the bottom of the page. I was playing with it for two hours last night, I can't decide what combo I want.

There are a couple of things that I noticed are different in the pictured instruments than on mine. The speedometer goes to 170, and mine goes to 180. The red line on my tach is a little higher. The tachometer is for a 5-speed and has the upshift indicator, instead of the gear indicator lights on the automatic. Does anyone know if differences like that will be available with the listed order program, or would a separate cluster and order program have to be started?

Just an FYI

The Speedo doesn't work for my 87 (180mph) and it will only work for 5 speed (which is OK by me).

Sounds like we need more 928 model year variants!

Need one for my US '79 auto. I want it to match exactly with my existing instrumentation. The instrument cluster pictured at the link supplied by Weissach looks identical to mine - am I in luck or is that just a 'stock' photo?

Yes, I am also sending them the 160mph speedo on monday. They still need a 180mph speedo (face only). I think that those will be only for the 87-88 model years. I have sent them a couple spare clusters but, no automatics. Those anyone have a spare "tach face" for the automatics? That should take care of most years.
