Default Great! Now where do my golf clubs go?? New Speaker Box!

Finally getting around to fiberglassing in my subs for a more professional look. First stage completed today. Main box and speaker mount rings. Box is offset below droping down to fill spare tire area for more volume.

Nextsteps: take box back out, sand edges and fiberglass rings for seal. Then body filler whole box for smooth finish. More fiber glass. Build amp rack above rear seats to hold top 3 amps. Run wires. Put on cover plate to reveal speakers and amps but hide wires. I was going to go with painted fiberglass finish, but have desided on a "leather" vinyl matching the seats, armrest, carpets and shifter boot.

All 3 amps will be in a row across the top with the largest amp down between the rear seats.

Here's the final system.
Fronts - Pioneer premier 6.5 + component tweeters/ 75Wrmsx2 amp(300max)
Rears - Pioneer premier 6.5 + component tweeters/ 200Wrmsx2 amp (800max)
Subs: 3000w 15" DVC @1ohm / Bridged amp 900Wrms @1ohm(1800wmax)
2x 2500W 12" DVC @1ohm / Bridged amp 1200Wrms @1ohm (2400max)
Upgraded alternator to 165a. Optima yellow top battery. 30 Farad Capacitor.
7" DVD head unit w/ remote 6 dvd/disc changer, Ipod in, XM radio.

Only the 2 12's and one amp are new. It was insane before with just the 15 into the spare tire chamber. Unlike the typical Boom, Boom system you here out of a Honda, Everything on this system is clear and loud!

The wife said one project at a time, so I have to finish this and get paint, before I can resume the hybrid rebuild. More importantly where do my clubs go now?

Remember these pics are of the sub frame, final result will be polished and fit well. And no, the 15 did not fall through it's recessed at an angle so the hatch will close. Once the fiberglass is in, it will make more sense.

Okay the sideways woofers.....they don't look sealed at all.....that won't sound very good, looks cool....but the waves will cancel each other out & the speaker behind it too....with that kind of power, you will blow them up pretty quick too

Hey Brian - i thought the same thing too when i looked at the pics first, but Terra's write up indicates that is pre-fiberglassing which will seal everything up nicely.

Terra - looks like a great project! I want to start a glassing project myself just to figure out how to do it. How did you learn? And - aren't you worried about breaking the rear hatch glass? That is some serious boom you are going to have!

They will be sealed when I fiberglass them in. The 15" can handle 3000w and the 12's 2500w. .Visonik set the world record for dbDrag 2 years in a row with that model 15" Doesn't get any more heavy duty. Weighs about 70lbs.

Also what direction speakers face makes no difference as long as they are in phase with each other. ie one in and one out, you would hook one up backwards so it's pulling when the other pushes. Since they are mounted opposite, they both actual pull and push together. Pretty common set up for custom installs. The box will be air tight when sealed with fiberglass. I know it's hard to see right now. Give me a couple more days and all will make sense.

Finally, clean power does not blow speakers, distortion does. You have a better chance of trashing a speaker with too little power long before trashing it with too much power. With larger amps you can turn the gain down resulting in a cleaner input and therefor cleaner output.

As for learning to fiberglass.....I still am I like to tinker. I did customer stereo installs in the 80's and early 90's got out of it before the fancy fiberglass stuff. Back to school I guess.. No better way than to jump into it.

The back glass is safe. the car is no where near selaed anough to blow the rear hatch glass. If it was I'd loose my hearing long before the glass cracked.

Very cool - what color are you painting the fiberglass? What head unit are you using? Please post pics of the progress!

Terra
Okay I get it now........I wonder if the fiberglass will be stiff enough for the 12's with that kind of power & heavy duty woofer? My guess is it will flex under the pressure...unless you lay it up very thick?

Your right about clean power vs distorted power....but 2375 watts rated is ALOT of power in a small interior car like a 928.....good thing you upgraded the alternator...so you are making a max of about 2300 watts at 14V (14v x165amps)...with a peak power of over 5000 watts...even with that monster capactior I would add a second battery....assuming the amps run 100% (which of course is impossible)....the peak power demands is over 415amps.... 50% is 930amps...etc.....even a powerful battery like the optima will be stressed....

What is the world db record? Many years ago when I was competing on the circuit it was around 150db....

!!!!!!!!!! Careful with the volume control. The hatch glass is VERY expensive.

HOLY CRAP!

Seriously dude, I'm all for customizing and I am FAR from a purist, but HOLY CRAP that's a bit much.

Does your volume go to 11?

Not sure today but I believe they hit 196db with 3 of those 15's in a small hatchback. Of course all glass was replaced with bulletproof plexi or even steel plate, door filled with cement etc.. Only rule in DB drag is you must drive it into the arena on it's own power and the stock engine is the only sourse of power. Dual alternators and tons of batteries are allowed.

With my set up I should break 150db, but no where near 170. db scale is logrithmic so every 10 points doubles the volume, but requires 10 times the power to get there.

I'm thinking about a second battery but have no place to put it unless I sacrifice the back seats. Gonna see how it performs. Even the most reputable amp manufacturer exagerates the output ratings. 1000w on the bench at a 1Khz signal +/- 1% distortion is cake. 1000w at 80hz off an alternator and battery is a whole different story.

Oh yeah, now THAT would be a deal breaker.

Terra, whose going to want to sit back in there anyway? A deaf person with perfect posture?

About 200lbs total, however I am making the whole system to come out in under 20 minutes for X-cross days. makin a quick disconnect harness for all bu thte main power and ground wires.

As for the back seat, my youngest daughter sits there often. Of course the stereo stays at a respectable level. Actually I rarely crank it up, it's more for show. I really hate when some punk pulls up 8 cars behind you and "shares" his bass lines with you...
