Only Britney Spears and Paris Hilton go without their undertrays.
Nicole, what is the rated top speed of the OB 928's. The ones without rear spoilers?
Do those cars suffer poor aerodynamic balance at speed. Granted they do not have the modern undertray to ?reduce? lift at the front axle.
Or does that 85mph speedometer hint at something. At 85mph do the OB 928's go poof into a temporal worm hole?
So does the paint under where the rear wing used to sit on buff back to shinyness?
Rog, that's a fine black 928 you have there.
If Rog was in a tux, we might mistaken hand him the keys and ask him to park it someplace up front. Just kiddin'.

There are differing numbers but seems the "Air dam (chin-spoiler) in front and a tiny black-rubber rear spoiler reduced aerodynamic drag coefficient from 0.41 to 0.38. " for the S and the S-4 with the venetian blind ducts in the nose gets down to about .34-.35 with the flat S-4 front "spoiler" and engine undertray ( preferably our all aluminum version ,shameless product placement ) First off we know the 78 and 79 had there nose way up in the air. Lowering the car and the front chin spoiler probably accounted for MUCH of the improvement for the S and the flatish spoiler and undertray was a big help to the S-4 . The rear spoiler no doubt adds some benefit for reduced drag (the 911 ducktail supports that theory) but I maintain that the changes to the front end tend to be far more important than what happens at the tail....one look at the amount of Duct Tape used on the ORR 928s seems to confirm this
I wonder what happens to the CD when the headlights are UP ??

I agree. I remember driving my old '80 928 across Nevada and Utah at high speed, but hit my limit of safety around 125mph, when the steering got too light. It really felt like the front end wanted to float off the highway.
My '84 doesn't do that at the same speed.
Thats the wonderful thing about a 928. Everybody can enjoy the color, bodystyle and accessories they like (or lack of them) and still have a great looking and performing ride!
'91 $4 a/t Black, wingless and proud!

I dont like this. So, i was wondering what the difference was from the other pics. I looked at them again, and OH!! GTS and the horizontal reflector. thats what makes it look like a carrera S 911
the S4 without a wing, looks a little odd

I agree, downforce ,drag, areodynamics, coefficiants, blaa, blaa, blaa,
Give my car to a "pro" he will drive faster laps tham me,
Ive heard that they have de-engineerd the bike from Rossi to suit his style of driving, to suit him!
We are mixing 2 things together- astethicis and function,at the end of the day it depends on the driver, how YOU feel,
if you "feel" faster with 2 white stripes along the side of your car than without, it can make a difference! (strangely enough)
Maybe porsche put the spoilers there for a fashion statement in the 80's? maybe not? but im sure they wouldnt but anything on the car that would reduce /limit/restrict the preformance of the car in any way,
Thats why i like German engineering -Function ober schoonheid, (function before beauty)
I have seen body kits for the 928 that function very good but look like sh*t! and kits that look great but function sh#t,
find a nice happy medium for your self and be proud of your creation- your 928 is an extension of your personality

The 928 race cars are several hundred pounds lighter than stock without flying off into space. The early 928 was considered very stabile at speed. To get an S-4 to go 150 mph you just need to hold down the gas pedal for a little while it is a none event unless the highway patrol sees you . With a 5 speed you are just about ready to shift into 5th gear. Down force anywhere on a car is basically a positive thing but with a car with so little net lift as a 928 and the rather high stock weight a hundred lbs more or less makes little difference just as having a passenger makes little difference. The NASCAR Car Of Tomorrow uses a airfoil and a front splitter instead of the rear lip spoiler to cut down on the turbulence behind the car and lessen the loss of down force when another car gets too close behind but the cars are slower !
I will speak to the looks only on this matter. I LOVE the black wing on a RED car. On cars other than red I like the wing to match the car and if it does it does not look as "dated" in my humble opinion.
I have a white 87 S4 and a white fiberglass wing to match. I love it, but I never liked the original black factory wing on it.

Roger...you sold me bro! That looks fab!!! I think the GTS wing is getting "shaved"!
As far as the under tray, I think this needs expanding upon. If the entire bottom of the 928 had a pan/under tray (even in several sections) the car would benefit greatly. Properly channeling the air at the leading edge of the vehicle will make significant changes in drag and lift. I suspect Jim knows what the heck he is talking about. You can take what he says and apply it to other vehicles where they have already addressed what he had mentioned. Heck, look at most high speed race (and race inspired) cars. They have full belly pans deferring what little air gets under the vehicle from accumulating and creating resistance and float from air pressure. I'm guessing that sticking a wing on the back of a road car is a lot more efficient and maintenance friendly, than fitting a full under tray.
Although the 928 in it's present form doesn't really allow for a full under tray, one of the wide body kits out there might get the skirts and all low enough to fit all under components within. I know, I know, not feasible in the least! Just flapping my jaw here.
BTW, sticking flares on a 928 didn't do a dang bit of good for the speed!
