Ausivision, while I understand what you are saying, let me put it all in a different perspective. I own an upscale steak house in an urban district. Occasionally a "street person" comes in for a glass of ice water and then goes and uses the bathroom. Although we allow those limited services out of common courtesy for free, they cost me money. I spent nearly $1,000,000 to open the doors and $3500 for an ice machine to make ice, am paying the bartender give give him the water and do it in an expensive glass. My bathrooms have to be cleaned by someone and let's not forget the special handsoaps and of course, the TP that gets used. I deal with with it but I'm not going to give him "steak" for free too! If I choose to NOT let someone "use" my stuff, I own it and thats the way it is! Enforcement of that rule is mine to choose. My father once told me to "Always go to another persons table with more than an appetite". I repect the investment of time, money and effort of someone else's livelihood as a "for profit" venture because of my own and therfore defend the $18.00 membership.

Ever see a thread where something is for sale, with a huge discount to members?
Ever need a few hundred MB's of online space to store images?
If you never plan on buying or selling anything to other members, and you don't feel somewhat obligated to support the site. Doesn’t need the web space, see no value in the private classifieds, or visit the OT area...then I agree 100%.
There are plenty of well known, valuable people in this forum who are not paying members.

Bingo – anyone can gain this knowledge 100% free of charge.
This is why I don’t understand the bitching about the $18.
If none of the paid features trips your trigger, don’t pay and live by the rules. Easy

I have 7 vehicles in my garage spread out over 4 different makes. I also help out my family members with their cars, add to that 5 other makes.
I have yet to find any site for any of these cars that is even half the help that Rennlist is. The help we receive on this site still blows me away.

I actually did some research on this a few months ago. The traffic / bandwidth of Rennlist is far beyond most other sites I could find. And far beyond any other manufacturer specific web forum.

Some other forums I frequent are so plastered with banner ads, I would gladly pay $18 per year just to clean up those sites.

918-S, as you can see, some "members" here take themselfs for "gods" of rennlist and believe they can say whatever they feel like to whomever they feel like. They were not shown good maners at an early age...

Not only (as fabio mentioned) it is IN to assel a non member to "dish out" the $18 but also now there is a trend towards offering at a "better price" to a member than a nonmember a part they advertise here.(I may be wrong on this one, as the interpretation of member and user is deferent to each of us)

I'm sure going to get some flame for what I just said but knowing were its going to come from, I don't give a crap.....

Note : I do appreciate most of the posts on this site, it as helped me and others in ways that money can't buy.

Note(2) : I suppose I will become a member at some point like some of you did, as I will have to request a part not available by anyother means.

Rick just to be sure you know you need an 85-86 short block and NOT 87-91 to keep the compression high enough with the Euro 16 valve heads. And yes I usually have one available but because shipping is costly it might be best if you located one closer to you. Plus if it comes out of an automatic check for thrust bearing wear before you buy it ! What did you determine caused the water/oil mix ?

We have heard this tired, old, pissy, whine so many times. Who the **** are these people?????

Word of advice, the board you want is the pelican board, you will fit in really well there............

Problem is ..the rennlist mentality lately is..as if your patrons...then would hound the homeless person..and tell him to buy a steak dinner..after all he is using the resources of your restaurant.. and then they proceed to pound him senseless.

I know a little extreme..but then so are some of the listers...

Later,
Tom

This is pretty common.
I cannot count how many times I was looking for a hard to find, rare part that really isn't worth a lot of money, someone sent me for free (one is on the way now, oil cooler fittings).
Twice this happened from european based Rennlisters.

Maybe it's a trust factor that if you see "member" you know this is not some random person signing up like on other forums.

A friend of mine was kicked off another forum, a forum he was a long time, well known member. What did he do? He linked to a part being sold by a non paying vendor. A part that was never before available (designed by this vendor). The post was not simply deleted, he was banned for life. One strike, gone.

I've received quite a few deeply discounted/free parts from members. Membership has its privileges. It's worth waaaay more than you pay for it.

918-S,

I frequent a few other forums, all of which are free as well. And I agree with your comments. However I refuse to pay for a membership on a board such as this to listen to alot of babbling, which is 99% of what rennlist is. There are only a few technical members who will actually answer technical questions.

And with your comment about being able to leave nasty comments to others once you have joined, I am afraid you wont be able to unless you are a certain moderator.

To be perfectly frank one of the main reasons I dont pay for rennlist is because all is not equal here. We all have seen writings by some not even glanced at while others which are FAR less rude they are banned for.

I suggest that you just stick around as a user for awhile and watch the threads, see how people go off topic in alot of threads. See the responces of the other people, then decide if you wish to line the pockets.

I mostly concur but other sites make up the difference with banners and advertisers which bothers some people more than others. Just like charging 18 bucks. To each his own.
