Question Towing with a 928?

ok, I'm sure some of you might think this is a really bad idea, but I was thinking about tow vehicles and I was wondering if the 928 could do it. It would have to tow around 4000lbs (a 951 and a trailer).

I just really like the 928 and think that it would be a great cruiser, and I think it would be good fun to show up at Porsche and BMW driving events in a 928 with a 944 Turbo in tow.

Odds are this won't happen, but I'm just tossing ideas around. (to give you an idea of how far my ideas varry, I'm thinking about buying a Escort Cosworth RS and using it as a track and street car and avoiding the tow vehicle all together.)

Ian,

Not really a crazy idea at all. In fact, there is/was a FACTORY tow package for the 928. M208 was the option code.

Just for grits and shins, one would need the following part numbers to do the addition:
928 722 031 02 Trailer Coupling
928 612 905 00 or 01 Electrical Installation Set Trailer Coupling

I did check a while ago, and they were still(!) valid part numbers. I didn't get a price as their computer was down.

I would guess the tow rating would depend on the MY. Not so sure about 4000LB without doing abit of research, but the car has more brakes and motor than a lot of trucks with that kind of towing rating, so I guess it could be possible.

My only concern would be the strain on the motor with really (numerically) low rear ends used in the some of the mid 80's cars.

HTH,

Greg

You're not gonna believe this, but FAT BULLY once was a tow vehicle.

Yes John, really! Now before you start flaming me, consider this - With a 928 you can tow a race bike on a trailer and do 180kmh all the way there (if you have a Uniden) and arrive at the track in airconditioned style. What's more, with the rear seats flat you can load it like a truck. Spare race bike tyres, toolbox, suitcases, the barbeque, camping chairs, leathers, boots, helmet and the kitchen zink.

Fact is, I managed to get the last OEM 928 towbar manufactured. Paid about $550 for it three years ago. It's now a worthless piece of steel taking up space in my garage, albeit in good condition...

Who's interested? Freighting cost would probably be kinda prohibitive though...

The mechanic working on my 928 picked the car up from my house and towed it to his shop for engine modifications. He towed it with his 928 by placing the rear tires on a car dolly and locking the steering wheel straight. He has the factory towing package on his 1980 euro s.

Hey Maniac...do you know where the tow bar attachment points are on the car? I'd like to fab a tow bar up so that I can move my 2 'non-runners' in and out of a tight garage space w my car's towbar. I saw the tow package in the partsfiche (78-82) but its not obvious to me where it hooks up.

Think I could modify the one you have easily so that I could use it on a car "to be towed" as opposed to using it to tow something?

thanks,
Jim

Jim,

At the risk of pointing out what you already know...

If you want a quick and easy attachment point to tow a 928, they are already there in the form of the tow eye sockets. The rear is centered right above the license plate frame, the front is under the pop-out on the fender.

I have had my car pulled onto a flatbed with only either one of these, and they work mahhhvelously.

Thanks Greg but what I really need to do is back the 928 in....there's no room for the tow vehicle to pull it in and then get out. That's why I'm looking for a bar. Someone suggested a makeshift one using the rear bumperette attachement points to secure it but it doesn't look like those are easily accessible...have to pull the rear cover off to get to them.
Actually one of those 1/2 trailers where only two wheels are lifted would be ideal...just too expensive unless I get lucky and find one that's about shot/repairable.

I have a cutom made tow hitch that will fit all pre-S4 928s. The hitch bolts in place of the bumperettes.

I had it made for my 86S (which has since been sold) and used it to tow a small utility trailer for hauling track wheels/tires, floor jacks, stands, etc.

If anyone is interested, it's for sale. It cost me $200 several years ago. Make a reasonable offer. BTW, it will come with a 1 7/8" ball.

Ian

When i got my shop manuals (finally!) i thumbed throught the specs and would you believe that it lists towing specs

Here they are:

Max trailer load -

w/o trailer brakes: 1653lbs (16% max grade)
with trailer brakes 3527 (16% max grade)

Max towing weight - 7650lbs

Max tounge weight - 110lbs

Pete the Frenzy V chairman had the best setup ive seen so far. His reciever socket is hidden behind his license tag mounted on a hinghed frame. He did have to cut a small square hole in the bumper cover to do it.
