Default Optical differences GT vs GTS engine ?

Hello,

how can you tell a GT engine from a GTS ? Consider the GTS is also 5speed. Are there any major- easy to spot- differences ? Car is 1980 conversion, so no chassis numbers to give a clue

Look at the engine model number stamped in the pedestal located under and slightly to the left of the oil fill neck.

GT = M28/47
GTS = M28/49

thanks Adam.

problem is that its too damn tight to view... thats why I asked for any optical differences.

I guess there are no other external clues, right ?
Are the intakes the same ? Car is German spec as is the engine

The breather system was modified..changes at the oil filler neck and a crossover hose to the drivers side cam cover. Probably look for an elbow and hose on the drivers side cam cover...but then again..some may have updated the breathing on the GT engine..

Good luck

Good catch Tom.
The GT/S4 engines had breather lines (two of them) coming off the passenger side cam cover only, the GTS tapped into both cam covers.

I'd dig for that engine number art, its right at the front of the motor on top. Access shouldn't be that bad. If I had my car here I'd snap a quick pick for you on where to look if you're not familiar with it.

If the car has been dropped into another chassis, anything goes and the engine number is going to be the only way to know for sure. Even if it's a GT block, there's no guarantee that all the things that make a GT motor what it is (flow match intake, different cams, different LH brain, etc) are there. Someone could have taken all the GT goodies, and just transferred with the block with standard S4 stuff.

The true tell all would be a dynosheet. Does this guy have one? You'll know right away what you have. The dyno signature of an S4 vs. GT vs. GTS are very distinct.

Thanks guys. Ill have a look and try to find the engine number. A pic would surely help....
Do you say that it would be better if it was a GT rather than a GTS ?

btw the drivers side valve cover has a tap on it on the top as if there was a place for a breather hose.

That would be a good sign as all other had plugs on the drivers side..but not a guarantee that it's a true GTS motor.....check the numbers...pretty easy to see..once you look there..

(yes a GT motor is much more desirable imho..but only in a GT body haha.. )

the funny thing is....the GTS motors are horsepower dogs...never seen one do more than 310 rwhp on the dyno....most range from 280 to 290..which is easily attainable with the S4 motors...but torque on the other hand...can't touch that...for sure...massive torque at the low end...which is why the heavy beasts can get out of their own way.. (of course..adding GT cams to the GTS motor is the way to go...it's what Porsche should have done..)

later,
Tom

What? And thoroughly vanquish the 911turbo? Bite your tongue Tom.

BTW, won't be able to make it out to Bremerton this a.m. Maybe catch the afternoon race or go tomorrow. I'll call when I know 4sure.

well, not quite but you get the idea.

The S4 is going to have a bigger first torque hump and peak torque is significantly bigger than peak hp. GT the humps will be the close and the hp/tq numbers are usually pretty close. As Tom states, the GTS is easily recognizable but its major torque numbers.

Now I don't want a flood of posts of dynographs showing my generalizations above are wrong, because what I'm stating are just that, generalizations.

the numbers are just to the right and underneath the top radiator hose where it is attached to the water crossover , you may have to move a few wires to see it and it might be a bit dirty but thats whare they are

Another thought, the GTS motor came with insulated intake tubes that run from the air intakes above the rad and go back to the airbox. I wouldn't use this as a basis for identifying the motor, but if the insulated tubes survived the transplant (instead of the plastic accordian type on the GT), that would also be an indicator that the motor is from a GTS.

I'll post a pic of where the engine number is located when I get a chance (anyone else who has one please post it) but the irony is that the motor in my car is a warranty replacement and has no numbers, but at least you'll be able to see the casting surface whtere the numbers should be stamped.

Check the oil consumption. Unlike the S4/GT, you'll find the GTS engine burns an excessive amount of oil between changes.
