Default Digital Display Question

One of the reasons I haven't disclosed the progress of the center console project was because it was attached to more projects in the interior of the car. LED change over of most all of the interior lighting.

So I changed out the back lighting for the cluster and it looks fabulous! So much easier to read and extremely visible in the daytime sunlight.

HOWEVER, I do not know what caused this. When all was back together, the normal orange digital display lost lighting to the outter edges.

If you look at the back of the cluster, there are four white bulbs displaying orange in normal function mode and four red bulbs for the "get your attention" messages.

I am going to change these eight bulbs over to LED, but why did I coincidentally lose the outter bulbs? Are they some how connected to the 4 bigger main back lighting bulbs? That is all I had changed for the time being. The polarity is correct with the LED's but that shouldn't affect anything...should it?

Any ideas?

In these pics, you can see the red is fine, but the orange is not....
(btw, if you have never tried to take pictures of your lit dash...have fun! It is extremely difficult to take accurate shots)

Keith-

I can't answer your question, except that I have one normal orange light out. It's pissing me off.

BTW, what LED's did you use? That looks AWESOME!

Andrew, thanks for always being the first one to respond to my posts...BUT YOU'RE USELESS!!!!

I have a list of all the bulbs for the interior that I will post in the near future. I told DR I would give him a list so maybe hit can have an LED kit available.

Seems my questions are beyond the Rennlist crowd of late. Might be a little too advanced for most I guess...not sure.

Keith perhaps few people have digital dashes and /or do not wish to work on a $3,000 dash display ! one which we know has a tendency to fail even when left untouched.

It seems to me that your outer LCD lights are not working. I know... Cpt'n Obvious! Did you touch these/replace them? Maybe jsut the R&R made them go out?

Keith:
It's beyond me (and you, obviously ) but mine was resolved by worrying the large connector. Had the same result when I pulled the pod for bulb replacement.

Keith, when I pulled my digital dash out I cleaned all the bulbs and put it back in only to have several not work. I ordered new bulbs and pulled the dash back out, installed the new bulbs and put the dash back in only to have the new bulbs not work either. I think what happened was the pc board gets a film on it and if you didn't put the bulbs back so the dimples were in the exact same spot it doesn't make a good contact.

try cleaning the contacts on the board with a pink eraser do both sides if you can, and also the bulb slots if possible

Huh?..I just don't have a clue what this means.

Thanks guys, but I never touched those bulbs. All I did was replace the 4 larger back lights.

I noticed this on my 90' S4 digital dash....

Sometimes after reconnecting the battery, one or both of the LCD side backlights go dim under battery power, however this seems to self correct after running the engine which brings the voltage up to 14V. After that backlighting is normal, even on battery power. The backlighting problem never reoccurs after running the engine, unless I disconnect the battery again, and then not with every reconnect.

At first I suspected something was wrong with the contacts. When I first purchased the car, I was doing lots of work on the car which required disconnecting the battery.

But later, battery disconnects became less frequent, and I concluded it was a component or design flaw and not the bulbs or bulb contacts.

Mine aren't dim, they are dark...and stay dark.

I have concluded that I must pull the cluster back out to check it....so, I decided to order LED's for the LCD back lighting since I was going back in (said the surgeon). I even ordered LED's for the Hi Beams, Parking Lights and Turn Signal since they are lit the most beyond start up. I considered all of the rest, but they are pretty bright to begin with and hardly ever seen.

Wish me luck and hopefully I will be reporting good news and a complete list of interior LED bulbs.

Are you getting fake brake pad warnings, Keith?

I've had and fixed and had and fixed them many times. I should get a quantity discount on pad sensors by now... LOL!

uhmmmmmm...yes , I most certainly am!...if that's how you want to describe it. It's not the sensors though. You can see my post in another thread BRAKE PAD SENSORS That's a whole 'nother issue!
