I am assuming you are talking C6 not C5? The C5's were still quite a bit rough and creaked and drove more truck like, the C6 is a big improvement and now with 450hp are quite fast. I still would buy a GTS for $40k over a new C6. I hate to say it but even the vette guys come over and have nothing but good things to say about it. My neighbor has a C5 Z06 Borla exhaust etc, and it is fast but not fun to drive fast. I found you have to work at it, very torquey and the shifter is all wrong. He can't drive it to save his life but he thinks it is great. When he looks at the GTS or turbo he just drolls.

Brendan,
Before buying a Corvette, why not check out different Vette Forums to see if you like the people and conversation. It appears that part of the joy of 928 ownership for you is 928 talk.

Terry R. is a local 928 owner that brought his new vette on our Heckowee tour. He said there is no question his new vette has way more power everywhere, always on tap, compared to his '89 S4 A/T. He had driven the tour (hours and hours of twisties)a couple years before in his S4, and he commented that he had the same amount of fun in his S4 compared to his new vette, only with the vette (and its 6 speed gear box), he's just working harder for it. I thought that was a pretty candid review.

C5's don't creak; you must be referring to the C4's.

C6 Coupe's have 400 crank horsepower, and the C6 Z06 505 crank horsepower. However, the C6 Z's dyno at 450 - 460 rwhp, so maybe that's where you got your number from.

and the (..Corvette) shifter is all wrong.
What is 'all wrong'? I take it you've never driven one.

Quite the contrary, the C5/C6 shifter is pure heaven compared to the 928, which in my experience is the worst shifter, ever, in a sport-type car, especially-so when it comes to downshifting. Can you say vague and sloppy? And mine is considered 'tight' compared to other 928's. Every time out on the track at RA coming into Turn 1, or 3, or 5, or 8, or Canada, I *wish* my GT's shifter was at least half-as-good as my C5 Z, and that is no exaggeration.

Warranty would be void by the first weekend. Car would be apart all over the garage.

I'm an owner of a "raggady old C4" 14K mile ZR1 to be exact...I still like my 928 better, for all the reasons anyone has ever given here.
Two different cars, the Vette and the 928, much to be liked and disliked about both...comes down to the person what they want.

I have nothing but respect for the C5 Z06. We have a local SCCA national champion that drove one for a couple of years and the car is damn impressive. A couple of publications tested his car and it set slalom and a few other records that have yet to be bested by any car. I drove a C6 recently and was most impressed with its flat torque curve. You just don't realize how fast you are going until you look at the speedo. No drama, it just GOES. I'd love to get one someday...

I personally like the exclusivity of the 928 ...(the above holds true for the 911 variants too..just way to dang common..)...

I'm currently looking for a sport bike..and of course..king of the hill...Honda RC-51..ZX-10R...etc etc...various gixxers..but..they are "common as mud"...so what am I looking for....Ducati 999 or 1098...rare as hens teeth..(relatively speaking of course) ..

Riding in our 928's makes a statement of appreciation for the unique...

Well said, Tom! But, you might wanna consider a new Triumph Thruxton as well...so sweet:

Brendan
I feel your pain......I also drove an 07 C6 auto 3LT last month......that thing has some serious TORQUE from the LS2....I mean you stomp to go pedal and its GONE.....I also was impressed with the vastly improved build quality & for 2008 they now offer the 4LT package with is basically a full leather package to improve interior quality to compete with Porsches-Audi-BMW etc.....the 08 C6 also has 30 or 36 more HP too......from a 6.2L LS3 engine.....so its only 70 behind the Z06 & 100lbs heavier for $20K+ less...the base vette is also more aerodynamic.... .28 vs .34 for the Z06

If you haven't noticed I am thinking about buying one as a daily driver next year.....but I still want my 928 track car too

Nope they were C5's I know the difference and they creaked badly all of them. The one with the glass roof was so annoying I couldn't stand being in it and I find it to be a tight fit.

The new '08 C6 non Z06 will have 450BHP up 50 hp from the 07's and the new Z07 will have 700bhp or near that.

I personally can't stand the level (height) of the shifter in the C5 it sits way too high vs the GTS which is right at my fingertips. The C5's I have driven shifted OK but not great I found it would get caught up down shifting sometimes, maybe had something to do with the shifter placement which I could never be comfortable with. My GTS is slightly notchy but very precise and easy to shift the clutch I find better also, although keeping the shift pattern straight sometimes can be a bit tricky since it varies from the 911's pattern. I can drive just about anything and the GTS is not as smooth or as precise as my turbo or C2 but of the C5's (non Z06's) I have driven my GTS shifter is much better IMO. The new C6 is much better placement and easier to shift, much more precise, all around I give th eC6 a big compared to the C5 and especially compared to the C4.

Any of the G50 especially the G50/52 tranny used in my turbo are quite crisp. Some of the best shifters of any car I have driven and I have driven a lot, they blow away the vettes tranny by a long shot. I agree the 915 tranny's used up until 1988 were very sloppy but once you got used to them they worked great. I can guarantee you you could not shift a vette as quickly or as precisely as my 93 C2 with a light weight flywheel. Rev matching is perfect and passengers have made comments that they felt as though it was an auto even though I was pushing the car to its limits.

Good point cobalt, I was thinking more along the lines of the 915 tranny's (I have yet to drive a 964). At this point many on the road do not have the best linkage either, making things even worse. Much like 928's, in what condition are most parts in the linkage on most of these 5-speeds?

Took’em long enough to catch up. But to say that the new C6 Corvette is better than a 15-20 year old 928 (or 30 like mine ) is IMHO akin – to saying that an F14 Tomcat better than a F4 Phantom? Sure it is but it’s hard to equate the two using the same 2007 measuring stick.
