Default Car ran great until.....(shift coupler - RV)

Truthfully I don't think its that bad of a problem and hope it's an easy fix.

Anyway after clocking more than 300 miles on my shark today I made it home and then decided to run around the corner to get something for supper when this happend.

The shifter rod coupling came apart just as I'd finished shifting into fourth. But luckly I was close to home and was able to limp home in fourth.

So it looks like the dust cover was torn up in the process too but from what I can tell the it looks as if a bolt or something came out and I was thinking I could just install a new bolt. If true - anybody know what size?

Or if it's a pressed fit am I forced to replace the entire coupling?

Options?

Well it looks as if the coupler is a pressed fit item. I see that 928 International sells them for $78 each. Oh well I guess I'll be giving those boys a call on Monday.

Hey Bret,

Its not a big deal to change, there is a rubber boot that is a pain to deal with. Also the setscrew on mine needed to be replaces and it is a separate part number. Yours setscrew is most likly fine

My car is an 88 and the P/N on the boot is 928 424 209 01 It shows it for 85 to 95 so I’m not sure if the early cars had a boot.

I’m still thinking I could put a bolt through it so I can at least move it around while I’m waiting for the new coupler. I might run over to the auto parts store for some with the fitting that goes into the rear shifter rod/link but I know it couldn’t be a perminate fix because there’s no way a new dust cover would fit back over it.

Diffcult to see clearly in PET exactly whats in your pic...but I would find a bolt or a clevis pin thats a nice push fit and go with it, if it works. Looks like 10-12mm from here...

you can put a bolt through as a temp work around however the pin is a press fit (or is supposed to be) if you put a bolt through use a nyloc nut on it so you dont have to tighten it.

After a quick trip to the hardware store, I had the car moving without any effort. Used a clevis pin that was almost a perfect fit with two washers one either side & a locking slit pin to hold it all in place. Actually it went together pretty easy and seems to shift a hell of a lot better than it was before the pin came out.

That leads me to believe that the thing was probably ready to fail at any moment and the car choose that one moment in time to finally let go. Only good fortune & a lot of luck kept it from letting go a few hours earlier when I was a hundred miles from home.

Right now I plan on calling my friends up at 928Int and placing an order for a new coupling assembly & dust cover.

I've helped fix one of those at the track with duct tape and a coke can on my dad's car. It worked pretty well. Just an FYI if you get stuck somewhere and don't have access to a nice hardware store.
