Help...Black smoke all of a sudden
Had a great drive to work this morning then when i started the shark for the ride home all hell broke loose. It started and ran for about 20 second then stalled. I re-started it and gave it a little throttle and it started spewing black smoke and running big-time rough. It settled down enough to think it was goint to clear up so i left for home 20 mi's. Bad ride! stalled at every chance. Ran way rich. All advice is golden. Thanks/

Similar to my experience when my MAF failed. The best way to diagnose the MAF is to swap with someone. JDS Engineering (John Speake) has a good writeup that explains more.

You might want to check your fuel regulator and dampers. Pull the vacuum leads off them and see if any of them leak fuel out. Not too difficult to do.

I had that happen to me once. Anders will remember. We detached the battery ground for a few seconds, put it back on, and the weirdo behavior cleared. That was 2 years ago. Hasn't happened since. Maybe you'll be so lucky. Also, I would check the MAF plug - pull and reseat - if you haven't. I see you pulled the MAF out.

Hee. Yeah. A couple of years ago, George Suennen's 90 died would not start. We changed just about everything on the car, but it still would not start. We were about to swap the MAF when I just unplugged it and plugged it back in. The car started, ran fine and has not had that problem since.

Well, I tried re-booting the shark. I put everything back togather and pulled the ground strap for about 10 minutes and re-started. Started great but after about 20 seconds started to falter and smoke big time. There's soot on my garage floor! By the way i also took a mouse nest out of the galley. Is it the MAF?

Easiest test is to swap out your MAF for a known good one......how close are you to some other listers in your area? Or try running the car with the MAF disconnected...if it runs the same or better...that its the MAF

I'm wondering about the O2 sensor...
The delay you saw after rebooting would be the warmup period where the sensor is out of the lop. Then when it kicks in, but defectively so, the mixture goes rich. Or it may just be disconnected.

Could be the TempII (coolant) sensor is bad, or the wiring is bad/disconnected. The TempII is on top of the thermostat bridge with a fuel injector style connector.
Disconnecting the battery won't affect a LH2.2 equipped (pre-S4) car, as it has no memory or adaptation.

Can't tell you for sure, but it likely is the MAF. I gave you the wrong name, it is JDSPorsche.com that has a nice explaination. It could be something else, but the best place to start is by reseating the connection to the MAF and then try a borrowed unit.

I did not try running the car with the MAF disconnected. I'll try that tomorrow am. When i checked the o2 sensor it was connected. I replaced it about 2k miles ago. I disconnected it and it made no difference.
I'm in Grand Rapids Mi. There are a few of us in West Michigan but most of the wrench bending guys are in Detroit. If anyone near has a MAF...I'll buy the beer!
