Default S4 oil coolers???

Okay so I know the S4+ have oil coolers built into the radiator end tanks....but those seem to get about ZERO airflow...so the only cooling effect it would have is the temp of the coolant vs the temp of the oil...so in reality not much effect maybe 10-20 degrees if that?

S4's can get oil quite hot during DE's or when driving hard on hot days.....but I can't seem to find a pre made additional oil cooler kit? Carl sells a filter adaptor that allows for an outboard cooler...but how big and where would you mount it for maximum airflow & what about an external fan?

I've seen outboard coolers placed in front of the radiator on a couple custom 928's....does anyone have any pics-tips of these installs?

Also what are the racers running? I know most run accusump...but thats not really a cooler.....

Finally how hot is too hot for the oil? I'm sure it varies with type-weight-etc....does my occasionally tracked otherwise bone stock S4 even need one?

Little data....when I got home from the napa fun drive I took some infared temp readings from the front of the 928....ambient temp was close to 90F the tranny cooler was at 172F The A/C condensor was at 98F the main radiator was about 180F with both endtanks at about 190F

Thanks

Look for a topic by Porken, he switched to a single air cooler in the rear of the car, I will be doing this to mine as well sooner or later, the factory lines are small and use banjo bolts all of which works for restriction which causes more heat to be produced, the coolant that the tranny sees is on the hot end of the rad as well.

Lizard
I think Kens cooler was a tranny cooler.....I'm more concerned with oil coolers right now....since the tranny doesn't seem overly hot, but we'll see at a DE to know for sure!

oops you are correct on that Iceman,

if you do a different oil cooler I would mount it in the fender just behind the light with its own fan get it out of the engine heat.

My '90 S4 has a factory oil cooler under the radiator. Maybe sourcing one of these would be an answer.

Well except for they tend to get damaged down there by road debris..I would venture a guess that the stock system is pretty good.....but I'm just looking for a little extra insurance!!

For a track car you could probably put an aftermarket in the place of the AC condenser...

Here is mine. I didn't use the oil filter adapter. I took the oil lines from the side of the block where the went to the stock cooler and made new lines from there. I used -12 AN fittings and made my own Aeroquip lines.

If I had it to do again, I would have stuck to the stock hose ends, gotten a cooler (setrab is what I used from Porterfield) with fittings that would match them or some adapters to make the connection and had new hoses made up with the stock ends at the local hydralic hoses R US and called it good. The new lines will need to be longer to come around in front of the radiator.

Making the mounting brackets for the cooler can be a challenge. Otherwise, pretty straight forward. Mine is mounted in front of the A/C condensor. It is mounted at an angle parallel to the grill. Seems to work fine.

Good luck.

The MY90+ oil cooler is above the spoiler and bellypan, so debris isn't a problem any more than any other radiator. George's is still OK despite his low ride height. I'm thinking of going that route.

Actually the oil cooler 1990-95 part number 928 107 212 00 was just made NLA by Porsche they stopped having them made ! Last price was well over $400 but they are no longer available according to Porsche. So using that cooler is NOT an option.

Crap!
Time to talk to someone like Fluidyne to make up a lot of custom replacements.
They will ALL need replacement (sometimes more than once) due to the silly location.

There may be one or two in dealers inventory but the main Porsche warehouses have none. There are so few 90-95 cars that tooling up making a prototype must be amortized over such a small potential market.

Not if all the earlier S4 guys want one

Guess I'll be buying one of those nice radiators you guys supply with the built in oil cooler when my stock cooler leaks, again. I won't replace it a third time!

That kills two birds with one stone....new radiator with new internal cooler all helps get rid of the heat.
