Question Nology vs. Jacobs plug wires?

Nology or Jacobs plug wires. Which is the best for the money. Or should I say which works the best for the 928. Money shouldn't really be a problem or we would all buy different cars. Any advice on these wires, Nology or save a little money and buy Jacobs?

I discussed this topic with my mechanic (who was the chief wrench for a team that ran at Daytona) and he said thqat good wires are good wires. We talked about the different types, and for the money he said the Jacobs for $135 are as good as any.
I installed them a month later, and nearly two years later, I haven't had any problems with them. The only inconveniences were that they didn't come pre-loomed (it took an extra hour to set up the looms and drill out the wiring holders. Jacobs wires are 8mm while OEM are 7mm) and the connectors to the plugs are not as nice and firm as the OEM (but so far they have not come undone). YMMV.

Are either one of them worth it or do I go with OEM?

Ricco,
There was a post earlier in the year on the Nology hot wires -it should be in the archives- the gist of the post was that while it was a good wire the cost was high and for some reason the plug 'BOOTs' would occasionally pop off. I have no experience with the Nology's one way or the other but in their defense I can't imagine plug boots just popping off IMO I'd say they weren't secure in the first place.

Did the Accels work out for you John?

My plan is to use Accel 8/8.5 mm, sprial wrapped
low resistance wires with their Super Coil, and platinums for the next tune-up. And to advance the timing a tad. I'm running way to rich after running injector cleaner and octane boosters thru the system for the last five months to smooth the idle out. Tinkered with the fuel air mix for the last two months and still rich. I can smell it and the tips have more soot than my chimney.
Plug check results...all 8 tan to light brown. Pattycakes runs like the proverbial Raped Ape but I think a double tap system with a long duration early start on the burn would increase HP, mileage or both.
Had some negative posts on the Super Coils but want to try anyway. Cost is an issue here.
As to the Nology wires. There was a negative post or two earlier in the year -check archives- and while I don't totally discount the possibility of them popping off, I'd have to hear a lot more gripes from users to think it was a common problem. Being a non- Nology user my issue is the cost alone.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts, comments, and BTDT's.
I got an order in for Jacob's but they are backordered. Don't know if they are going to get here before I leave for Washington. Should I cancel and go with a different brand?

Are the plug end boots on the Jacobs wires the rigid style, like the stock ones, or are they soft and rubbery? I have the Magnecore wires on my car. I'm very happy with them, except for the soft style of plug boots.

Ok, I canceled the Jacob wires!
I went with Fyrebraid wires with OEM Beru connecters. In 29 Days I will install them and let everybody know how well they work. Last summer when I installed the platnum 4's I noticed the wires were in pretty bad shape but still functional. I spend a month a year working on and driving my car and another 11 months saving money for next years mods.

Cool

Shane I just put the Nology wires on my '85 S2- they look hot and solved a rough running problem that I've had for a while.

The first time I've seen this- a ground strap for each wire. I'm still trying to figure out where to bolt them down.

They look hot too! I bought red ones, and they are cut way too long. I've got them all over, and it actually took just as much time to make them orderly as it took to put them in to begin with! They came with some first class looms too.

The Fyrebraids are red too, and I think the selling point for me was the OEM connectors.

Thanks for the Responce.

Shane,
1. I have the Platinums - little jewels, they are - I can get the Accel wire anytime.
2. I think Norm is: A.) Holding his used wires for ransom.
B.) Busy with the Shark Run this week.
C.) Either still chasing and or recovering from his long interface with the Belgian First Officer.
He is a self admitted Tramp who would take off more than just his hat at the 'bat' of ANY femme Fatale's eye... An admirable trait amongst many, this behavior is the 'NORM' in the field of aviation. A note of caution Norm, Those female aviators will beat you to the draw with the:
"Yeah, I did him, nothing to write home about", faster than the average wing walking male aviator can clear a wedgie. And never, ever cross them. If they give you a poor performance evaluation the news spreads fast in the Aviation Community.
If the male stews, start giggling you know it's time to slit your wrists...
In any case, I want the wires for testing, crap, I forgot to have Norm number them...er...for the boots then. I noticed that Mopar has OHC- thru the head wires and boots, too. Saw them on an Intrepid... when is that Hemi coming out? So I want to do some comparisons. I am also trying to track down one of those Toyota Limo Hemi's anyone seen one? Fuel injected, close to a 4.7L from what I've heard.
I'm always looking for option, albiet on the cheap.
I'll let you know how things go ... eventually.

Uh, I have a small but to add to this discussion, (though I'm still trying to figure out what's just been said) but on the forum accessible via Phil Tong's site, there was a huge thread about the merits of Nology hot wires and the CEO of Nology actually posted in explaining his scientific data (or someone doing a good job pretending to be him). I don't know how it came out, but hopefully that thread is still up there, it might be worth a read.

Hey guys, I just bought a set of red 8mm wires from Eric at Projekt928. Perfect fit on my '79 with the OEM Beru connectors and a great price for custom coloured fat wires.. Each plug is even marked with the cylinder number on the ends.

I've invited Eric to come on over and join this discussion. Feel free to tell us more about your wires Eric.

Flint,
Just opinion, here.
Shane asked which was better the Nology's or Jacob's.
Any one who has bought one, or, the other is , going to have an opinion -usually positive about their new set. That's a given.
I butted in there with the statement, " what is wrong with the OEM set? ". Frankly, there is nothing wrong with the OEM wires. That is also a given.
Do the Nology and Jacob's wire sets offer less resistance, therefore providing a hotter spark and providing a more efficient burn, better mileage, and maybe even a few horsepower. Hell yes, especially when teamed with a new cap and rotor. I would bet a few bucks on that statement. Another given.
But, value like opinions can be interpreted on an individual level. If someone can demonstrate, not estimate, that my engine will live another 25-50,000 miles over the OEM's I'll buy them. Keeping in mind I could croak in 5 years and still not have put 15,000 miles on the car as a daily driver.
If I race, plan on going to Bonneville, or the Ft Stockton, Texas Closed Course...I'll buy them.
Like most sHARk owners I don't plan on doing any of the above so I'll spend $95 - $125.00 on OEM's and save mucho dinero.
I am looking at Mopar, for it's old Hemi wires, it's new OHC thru the head wires, and Toyota made a EFI, auminum, Hemi for it's Limo series.
Checkers Auto Parts had a 3 sets of wires made by Allied Signal, marketed as Tune-up Masters.
$56.00 bucks a set. None of these manufacturer's and marketer's is looking to be embarassed by a lame product.
I love the looks of the 928 series, the performance, handling, and relative rarity is a plus, too. But I don't stand on posterity when it comes to parts that work and cost half as much.
No I don't live in a trailer park - linear aluminum living -, have no intention of hurting the Marque. However, I did grow up on a farm where thrift is a way of life. And felt right at home haggling with professionals from Korea to Baharain. Why pay retail?

Well said John!

I too grew up on a farm, (in northern Idaho) and had to be creative in keeping the equipment working at minimal costs. Great character building stuff. Plan to raise my son in the same manner. Well possibly sons as I have another one in the oven. Due out in Sept., still haven't found out if it is a boy or girl yet. Buying expensive wires and other luxuries for my car is a way of spoiling it and me at the same time.
Just curious as to which were functionally sound.

Well stated John!

Dude, you hit the nail on the head with regard to female aviators! I couldn't agree more...

-I didn't make it to SITM...I've got an odd miss that disturbed me enough to abort the 450 mile drive and stay home. That and there's a music festival in Orlando this weekend that I wanted to get naked at anyway-

[AS to the plug wires...I never got a response from you when the Nology's arrived. Email me your address and I'll send them. A plus: most of them have little plastic cylinder numbers intact...]

Really, the sight of the Nology wires was what attracted me. Though I have a huge habit of frugality, occasionally I strategically spend. This was one of those occasions. Funny thing- I didn't grow up on a farm, but our house was surrounded by farm fields. And at one point in my flight instructor days, I did indeed live in a "mobile tornado attractor"-

See! I told you I was trash!

Normy!
