I'm looking at a '79 Euro automatic 928 with low miles (sub 100K). The car appears to be in pretty good shape and is being sold by a mechanic that I sort of know. The AC blows cold, and the car starts right away. I'm pretty familiar with cars, and I didn't find anything that jumped out at me. However, I have a few questions.
1. Is there anything in particular that I should be looking for?
2. He is asking $6500 for the car. For the money, it appears to be in very good condition.
3. Should I save a little more money and hold out for a later model 928?

Gary, I got my Euro 79 for 4500. It had an oil leak that I fixed and a few dash problems that I still have not gotten around to.
Just make sure everything works. Check out the dash and make sure all the guages and lights work. If the motor runs good, does not leak or smoke then its probably okay. Anything on the interior will be extremely expensive to fix. So if your thinking that the car looks good but needs a new interior and thats no big deal think again because you could spend thousands on it.
The previous post is correct. Spend as much as you can on the best possible 928. My 79's interior is almost perfect, motor and 5spd trans runs strong and the paint looks really good. It has the 16" polished slots with almost new tires. It also has an S4 wing. 6500 seems a bit steep for a 79 but if the car is in awesome shape and you feel that the service has been kept up then you have to make that decision. My 79 did not come with any service records or receipts so I was just going on looks and how the car felt while driving. Most people on this board will tell you if they cant provide evidence of service then you should pass on it. I for one dont believe that. However im pretty knowledgeable about cars in general. This 79 is the first Porsche that I have ever owned and I love driving it and also working on it.
Call Bob Delano. He is in Kansas City, and has about five 928 cars for sale. I believe that he has 3 or 4 euros. I think 2 are autos. However, one of those euros is a screamer! I ahve never heard a 928 grwel like this one! I have an 82 5 speed non-euro, and it is fast. Well, this one is hot! His number at work, where he usually answers questions is 816-628-6464. Search the archives, as there is a wealth of knowledge on this board. I found plenty of helpful people and useful check lists for the first time buyer.
Gary, I too agree with Curt. I bought my 82 928 (non euro) with no receipts/records and knowledge of it being wrecked (salvage title) At the time it was the best 928 that I could afford. I have put money into it as I expected and if I ever do sell it, I will have records of what I have done to it. Do what you feel comfortable doing with a 928 purchase and be your own mecahnic it will save you thousands.
I agree with Curt and Chucker. I have a '79 Euro and it has been a non-stop rollercoaster ride. I bought mine because I wanted a project car and I wanted a Euro. The best advice I can offer is also get an idea of how much it would cost to replace parts. 928 International has some of the best prices. I would check them out. Devek is another good one. Also, the Rennlist 928 guys can answer your questions like no one else. They have helped me numerous times and I have really appreciated it.
Gary, as for the part of your question about holding out for a later model: I think that it's almost a crap shoot. Look at the 928 International catalog and do a price comparision on one item between the pre 1986.5 and the post 1986.5 On some items your ahead and others your behind. I had someone tell me not to touch anything before 1983 because the parts would kill me. So far my 1982 parts have been something that I can handle. Another good source for both parts and info is 928 Specialists. Dave and Jennie have been wonderful and honest. And on a few things you can save by buying used off of another 928 owner or go to the partsbin.com they have free shipping on purchases over 50.00 and its OEM. <img src="graemlins/yltype.gif" border="0" alt="[typing]" />
Thanks for all of the advice. I'm going to pass on this car and probably hold out for something newer (1985-87) unless I find a really nice older car at the right price. I haven't fully decided yet, but the HP numbers for the S models are very seductive.
