Thought the accepted practice was to pull the hood release and then squirt retardant
into the engine compartment through the hood gap WITHOUT opening the hood fully.
Halon/halotron would work well in this case since it'll smother the flame without needing to
be sprayed directly onto the fire, if I understand the oxygen robbing properties of the H stuff right.

H, I hope you wear natural fibers and not that polyester stuff. Would hate to see all that polyester
all balled up on top of the intake.

But you have to pee on it first right...?

I know:

You could strap a 1L water bottle to the front of the passenger seat so you can take a big gulp when needed... You could use one of these quick release fire extinguisher mounts for it.

How about a fuel cut off switch? This would help matters. It's also, not that tough to rig extinguisher lines into the engine bay from an extinguisher from insdie the car (or spare wheel area).

When you think about it though, this is quite uncommon...though as sure as ducks fart in the water, word will get out that the 928's now spontaniuosly combust and there goes any shred of value left in them.

It's like the timing belt myth, just properly maintain the car and it will serve you for many trouble free years of operation....neglect them and they will turn on you!

Agreed Keith it is uncommon. So, I say get funky and let it all hang out. Seriously if you carry a regular extinguisher and your lines are fresh, you are fine -- we are talking about Shane whose fuel pressure on his 22yo lines was sky high, and very few other incidents ... the lines are 20+ years old and brittle. If they last THAT long ... they aren't too crappy Jim, well you know what they say, the very least you can do is to go out with a BANG!! As opposed to going to Bankok or something ....

Keith - I have the fuel cut off switch option on my car , I also do have the plumbing direct into the engine bay and a Halon extinguisher to connect to it.

While posting tongue in cheek - I do take this very seriously...

There is no time ever I want to be watching my GTS burn without having the means to do something effective about it. For <$200 (including a halon extinguisher) and a 1/2 days work anyone can do the same.

And yes I have fresh fuel lines too...

A 2.5lb Halon extinguisher is ~$100. Why would anybody not buy one for their car if they are considering any fire suppression? The $80 difference between that and a good ABC dry chemical extinguisher is easily made up in lack of cleanup and corrosive chemical damage.

Wow - that certainly woke everyone up.
Zane just left for the Post Office with 22 EFI kits.
Thank you everyone for your business.

More will ship tomorrow.

Now I need to buy a bigger extinguisher.

That's my cue -- time to post the car-b-que pic again.

I have been wondering about that picture. Is that the way a fuel/engine bay fire would burn on our cars? That looks more like an interior fire. Why would the windshield blow out and the firewall give in before the hood shows any signs of heat or damage? Weird . . . Who authenticated that picture?

Someone I know sent it to me a couple years back in an email with a "Hey Dave, is that your car???"

I really don't know anything about it, but I may have been the first one to post it here, for what that's worth(nothing).

My guess is it may have started as an electrical fire. I agree, it doesn't look the way I'd expect a fuel fire to look, but it does get the point across on the subject of fire safety. My theory, from having talked to many people about this shot, is that the reason it's so gut-wrenching is because the car looks like it was in concours-winning condition 5 minutes before the pic was snapped.
