Default The Porsche 928 has killed my dreams...

...of owning a 911, which I have wanted since I was 10. I finally got a 911 back in Feb but something wasn't right. I picked up my first 928 a few weeks later, because the 911 was in the shop and I needed a P-Car to play with.

Got the 911 back finally last week, and the motor is unbelievably strong compared to what it was before. (broken exhaust studs and the associated compression loss).

BUT...

I can't even look the 911 in the headlights any more. It's like finally dating your dream girl, and discovering she's a he.

It sounds like a chainsaw, is built like a tractor and that gigantic whale tail just looks silly to me now.

Any other 911 -> 928 converts out there who care to share?

I have an '86 Carrera which was my first. Two months ago I picked up my new C2S, so now I have 2 911's (and no other cars). 2 years ago I bought an 86.5 5-speed 928S, in beautiful shape with sport seats. I sold it last year. I miss it terribly. The 997 is so damn good that I've decided to replace the 86 with a 928 GTS.

Point is, for me anyway, I simply must have both a 911 and a 928. There is no "dark side". Both cars are superb in different ways and deserving of the utmost respect.

Well said!

I love my 993, and my 928's, for entirely different reasons.

They are very different cars. (understatement) And, I like them both for different reasons. If I had taken the 911 to SITM I would have been beat to death, instead of 14 easy hours, less a few on the BRP. The 911 has a lightness of touch that I like and the 928 has a solid feel that I also like, both at different times and different modes. In my opinion when Porsche designed both of them they did it without a graduate maintainabiliy engineer, maybe he passed 5th grade, and I don't see fix'n elegance in either.

I'm not trying to pick a fight or claim I'm some kind of an expert on P-Cars, but seriously, what is the upshot to the 911? I'm honestly looking for it, I really would like to keep one in the family. I've just put a lot of money into mine, and the drivetrain is tight as a funeral drum. at 5500rpm it sounds like Satan yelling at his kids. But I feel like I'm driving a flamboyant MG. I drove my neighbor's - a museum quality `88 Carerra - and didn't feel any differently afterwards.

I can't get my head around the way it's built. I look into that engine compartment and it's like Alien Autopsy. I start it up and it sounds like a VW.

On the other hand, no car I have ever owned, or driven, has required the amount of attention and work at simply driving it that the 911 does. My wife and a few friends find it almost impossible to drive. I kind of like that.

I love the lines on it, I can look at those hips and the 15" Fuchs all day long.

I've always wanted to Rally race, having grown up in Nebraska on gravel I love traction deficient environments - I was in my twenties before I realized you are allowed to drive a car straight on dirt/gravel or throw a football. My thoughts now are vacillating between selling it and building into a Rally car. The SCCA RallyCross scene looks pretty cool to me for a starting point. Any thoughts? The 911 seems like a really good platform for that sort of driving.

Again, I'm not trying to offend anybody and certainly not casting aspersions on anything Porsche, just thinking out loud and listening to a community I respect. I am all in with these cars, my first being just a few months ago and now I have three that run great and a parts car and a DR SC on order.

Right now I am up at what is currently our family getaway home in Ellijay GA, deciding on a new home site - looks like we will be moving out of the city and up here onto 25 secluded acres so that my wife can have her dream home... and I can have my dream garage.

I'm Porsche for life, but I'll be darned if I can't keep feeling like the 968 and the 911 are keeping me from the 928.

Congrats... that's a great area, and Fort Mountain is one of my favorite rides!

I'm still dreaming of my ultimate garage... one day... one day.

For me it's the "whole package" aspect of a 928.

There's nothing I've ever driven that has the combination of looks, speed, acceleration, handling, and comfort of the 928.

The shark may not be the very best in any one of those single categorys, but taken together, nothing beats it.

I guess what I'm saying is that the 928 has no drawbacks - no weaknesses. There's nothing that makes me wish, "If only..."

De gustibus non est disputandum.

We are a varied community here. (though tightly bonded!) But if there is anything we have in common, it is our irrational love of 928's. Look at Hacker's post from a few days ago - with him, it's almost medical. (That and that awful rash... ) https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/356851-it-s-a-sickness-w-is-wrong-with-me-i-m-actually-thinking-of-buying-this-one.html

Point is, while the driving experiences are truly different between 911s and 928s, the levels of driver rationality are likely very similar - both quite low! For as long as this board is online, we'll be wondering about the 911s and they will be wondering about us. Our tastes are different, our illnesses are related.

I'm on HWY 52 West, 6 miles from Ellijay. Ft. Mountain is my backyard here. It is a wonderful road - If you're not behind an RV!

I'm one of the converts to 928s from 911s/914s. I had to get an automatic. I got a 928. My love affair for 911s is waning every day. They are cramped and for no reason I can imagine except lower frontal area and tradition. The 928 seating position is the best I can imagine or have experienced and that is what makes it such a great GT car for long distances. The car is designed around the driver, not the other way around. I once thought that about the 911s, but they can't compare to my 928. I have wanted a 993 narrow body for as long as they have been out, but that desire is waning also. And of course any 911 afficianado wants to get his hands on a 2.7L RS lightweight, but now that has almost disappeared from my mind. I can appreciate them for what they are but I want another 928 as a spare. And I have my 914/6 for air cooled go kart fun. The only 911 I might want if I had the coins and could pry one loose from someone's grip is a 911 GT1. Now that is a car for which I lust.

But there is one thing I wish my 928 didn't have: that crummy fiber and black crap carpet which deteriorates and leaves fibrous thingies all over the interior of the car everytime it is bent or folded. Hate that stuff.

I'm not sure I can explain why I love the 911. I just know I love the way it feels to drive it. I love the 928 for the same reason, but it obviously is a much different drive. Yes, the 911 is a handful to drive, especially the older ones. My new 997 isn't any more difficult than my 5-speed 928 was, but my 86 takes a great deal of effort to drive it properly. It rewards me for my effort though, in spades. Both the 911 and 928 make me feel like I'm part of the car.

The 928 is much more comfortable, and for highway journeys there isn't any car on the planet I would rather take than the 928. I drove from Denver to Sharktoberfest '05 in a single day, and at no time did I ever feel fatigued or wanting to get out of the car. I was amazed. The 911 could never have done that. On the other hand, the 911 is better in some ways - it feels more nimble and has a quicker turn-in. It feels planted to the road like no other car, including the 928 (I haven't driven a 914, 944 or Boxster though). The 911 "drive" is more involved than the 928. The 928 is a relaxing drive. The 911 is more exciting. I'm in love with both.

Drive whatever blows your skirt up. We have these 911 vs. 928 threads all the time and the responses are always the same.

Sorry guys, I love the 928 but I would take the 911 anyday if they are equal years, condition, etc
