I remember years ago Car&Driver did a test on a 968 Tiptronic. They pointed out that it was such a dog that the two-door Ford Tempo V6 they tested in that same issue had a better 0-60 time.

I like the 968...or at least the headlights look good!

Better than the 928....not even in the same league....now a euro 968 turbo.....that would be something....but cars with torque and HP curves that both look the same are not very fun...I'll take my torque table and 45' HP curve anyday

V2: I call "b...s...", all in the name of good fun. Numbers I have seen for the

4.7L-16v M28/12
300 hp 263 ft lb
968 2990 c.c.
240 hp 225 ft lb
very good specific output, just not as good gross
Always willing to learn

I meant in terms of US spec.

You know, the 237HP emissions-bullcrap-compliant version.

What a send off for the 944 series. Building a final model that has about the same performance as the slowest 928.

Then you add the tiptronic model and you have one of the slowest Porsche's made in the past two decades.

With the 968 you will spend a ton of money to squeeze an extra 5hp out of that motor. With exhaust mods the early 928's gain 30+.

It's a shame - 928's were upgraded to the GTS. Porsche was working on the ultimate air cooled model with the 993 Twin Turbo.......then they crap out the 968 engine.

Ouch..

umm lets see they started out with a 130HP 944 4 cylinder increased the displacement by .5L and added variocam which booted it another 100HP. Pretty impressive if you ask me. If memory serves me right the 968 engine was the most powerful production NA 4 cylinder in America at the time. What was that again about crapping out on the 968 engine?

Well I didn't post that to be mean, it's just how I feel. IMO the 968 is one of the best looking Porsche ever made. The other two models were given a nice send off to say goodbuy to an era of Porsche autos. The 968 got table scraps.

Three liter - virocam (how many years befor VTEC?) 240hp???? They weren't even trying. HP per liter it really wasn't all that bad, until you remember the previous year 951 had 250hp.

Now I could really go on about the 928GTS only having 350ish hp with a 5.4 liter. I'll save that for a different thread.

Cheater, you added something:

The 968 engine alone is just fine. My beef is the final 944 should of had more. The car that saved the company, why not do a 300hp version? Something for us to really sink our teeth into. But NOOO, God forbid something is faster than the VW in the corner.

So in 1995 a $45,000 - $50,000 Porsche with a 0-60 in over 7 seconds is good? Oh great, now I've pissed off the Boxster owners.

I've honestly felt for years the 944 turned into the biggest inside joke in the German auto industry. I can just imagine a group of German businessmen sitting around a table laughing at how much they can actually sell a 4-banger Porsche for and we are still buying them.

My 944S has a sticker price of $43,000 back in 1987 (sold in 1986).

Base price on a 87 Turbo was $33,250. Mine was well optioned with LSD @ 37k. Who ever bought your car new wasn't exactly the sharpest knife..

V2:
I stand corrected; except the torque remains the same in the US version (and better) than the 968.

I did my research and the 928 tops the hp per pound rating

1990 928 S4 = .089 hp per lb
1992 968 = .076 hp per lb
1990 944 S2 = .073 hp per lb
1988 924S = .060

Comparing the prices on the original window sticker (that's in the glove box) to prices I've seen quoted on other window stickers, nothing shady with this car. So maby mine we even more well optioned

Was your car an MO30? If not I wouldn't consider it well optioned.

Even with your car, $37,000 for a 4-banger turbo with less than 250hp today would be questionable. Unless you slap on the Porsche badge.

More well optioned? The two key options are M030 and LSD which mine have!! I’m guessing your S only has the options that really matter such as a coffee maker $5k, touring tires $3k, and S badge $5k??

Come on guys, this old chestnut again. The reason Porsche never mass marketed a 968 Turbo was down to the 911 whcih despite the 928 being a more advanced car the 911 is always the flagship (even with the Carrera GT in existance) Why would you mass market a 4 banger that could out perform everything in your current range as well as outhandle everything in the range?
Plus there was still the old air cooled thing around at that time with the majority of new porsche buyers. Maybe some of you are too younf to remember it. The view was that the 944/968 was an Audi and the 928 was a double barrelled Audi. Porsches were air cooled...................... end of story and that is the way it should stay.
I know of some loyal Porsche buyers who had bought a new 911 every couple of years that stopped buying Porsches when the 911 went water cooled.
Anyway the 911 is the reason a high powered send off was never given to the 968. The Club Sport is quite rapid I can promise you.
Why does everybody have to bring up the old model bashing, they are all Porsches and great cars. Every single model has its own shortcomings
