5spd GTS box and speedo problems on a 1990 GT
Hello all,
I recently bought a OEM rebuilt 5spd GTS box to swap my knackered GT one. The swap is a straight fwd one, but I am stuck with regards to getting the speedo to work. Is there a way that my 1990 GT clocks can pick up a signal from the ABS sensors?
The alternative will be to swap the rear covers, swap the internal pump driving cog with the GT one with the magnetic points and use an electric pump for cooling. However, given that the GTS box was rebuilt by the factory in Stuttgart, I am very reluctant to mess with the diff in order to do the above procedure and thus upset the backlash adjustment etc.
Thanks in advance,
Alex

fabricate and mount an external alloy wheel with imbedded magnets to the inner CV joint and fabricate a mount to hold the pickup near it. It makes 9 pulses per revolution as I recall so nine magnets but confirm that before you build it

IIRR change was done in middle of '90 MY in all markets. When exactly nobody seems to know. There is one old thread in archives with some VIN and gearbox numbers where people tried to find change point.
No need to take box out of the car. You can remove end plate while box is in. Or have Jim get his hands dirty. Sorry Jim

On USA cars it was 1990 with PSD as I recall
Besides Wally's car, it appears the switch was very late in 1990 and all 91-95 use the wheel sensor.

That's great help from you. Much appreciated. I will take pictures and I will let you know how it goes.
The interesting thing is that someone else suggested that the 1990GT should be able to pick up signals from the ABS as the PSD brain as everything else is much the same as on the later cars. However, I like the KISS principle , thus I would start with the magnets experiments first and see how it goes from there...
