Post Way off topic, need credit advice.

I have a collection on my credit report that just appeared in december, so no loan. Its for $300 from a phone company i called them and they told I didnt owe them anything. I asked even if i did and they sent it to a collections agency if it would still show up and they said yes. So now I called Equifax and orderd my credit file. Phone company is also sending me a letter that i dont owe anything. Can anyone give me an idea of how long this takes to remove? Or a faster way of doing this. I have never had this problem before. It knocked about 120 points off of my score.

I appreciate any help. Thank you.

Jack.

it will take about 5 days for your credit report too come from equifax. Once you "dispute" the collection account, and equifax contacts the "phone company" about 2-3 weeks later, you should recieve a new credit report

Happened to my wife and I through Equifax a while back when we re-financed our house. They had combined her history with a dead beat of the same married name. Different SS#, different maiden name, different residences and jobs. However the Equifax idiots combined them. It lowered my wife's score from 740 to 300. The other woman was a deadbeat with credit. All we could do was order the Equifax report online for $30 and then you have to dispute the problem and they will investigate it. It should be clear in 30 days. It sucks that you will have to pay for their mistake. At least you can track it to make sure it is corrected.

This sort of same CaCa happened to my mom. You need to contact the credit/collection company that put this on your report. Only them and only them can remove this collection notice. Not The Credit Report Company

Step 1. Get the Invoice from the Company the you supposedly owe money too. Make sure that it's on their letterhead and the balance pending is zero. The letterhead is a BIG DEAL. Also provide a contact name.

Step 2. Make 3 sets of Copies. 1 for your record, 2 for the Collection agency 3. One for Equifax or what ever.

Step 3. Send all Necessary information, copies to the collection agency and credit report company. Registered Mail. Get a signature

Step 4. Ask for Contact Name of the Collection agency and Bug the crap out of them until the follow through with removal. Remember, they deal with thousands of people and if you don't persist, it may take up to 6 months.

Step 5. Make sure they put it writing and ask for an apolgy or - what are you guys going to do for me since you screwed my credit by 120 pts.

Hope this Helps and Good Luck!

"All we could do was order the Equifax report online for $30 "

By Federal Law - if you are turned down for credit, the credit agency reporting the information is required to provide you with a copy of your credit report AT NO CHARGE!

JACK - IMMEDIATELY send "WRITTEN" dispute of the account to the credit reporting agency. The creditor then has 30-days to prove or rescind the information.

I would also send a letter to the phone people - summarizing your conversation with them. If it ain't in writing, you will have little or no recourse! One little 'trick' I use in similar situations..."cc" your lawyer...whether you have one or not - it generally shows you mean business. Maybe one of the rennlist members is an attorney that you can 'cc' the letter to!

They are sending me the letters, I went to a diffrent bank where I have a friend that let me see my report. My credit score is like a 560. I had almost a 700 on my report wich is good for my age I am 21. So when I get the letter from the phone company I make copies and send it to Equifax with the dispute forms In registerd mail? Equifax will take it off once I show I dont owe any money right? The place I owe money to supposedly is South Western Bell. They say I owe no money. They gave me the 800 number for equifax where I call and they mail me my file with the forms.. If I owed a collection agency would it say? It says South Western Bell on my report. Thanks for the help.

Oh yea the date it says the money was owed is like 3.5 years ago wich I though was odd because it was reported in december of 2002.

BINGO JACK -

You're 21...money was owed over 3 years ago - in other words...when you were 17?

I think you have them by the gonads, my friend. Call equifax...tell them the dates the money was due - and have them verify your birthday. I may be wrong (I'm not an attorney) - but I don't believe you can be held liable for credit debt as a minor ...i.e - under the age of 18.

credit is F'd up, to put it politely.

4 years ago i bought a car and was told i had a collection from the local cable co. $200 for and unreturned coverter box (i never had a converter box). got the letter saying i never owed them any money, sent it to the Big 3, and it was cleared from my record. bought the 928 2 years ago, no credit problems. a month ago i called the bank about another car loan. what did i get?

"did you know you have a collection from AT&T cable on your record?"

pay cash.
