not in the case as much as re-folded and wrapped in a non-static bag seemed to help. we also changed out the EZK on 1 car and it seemed to help.. not sure why, could have been that we were more careful about folding it up and placement the 2nd time around....

it is VERY sensitive to external noise for sure. also try to keep your PC cables clear of anything, and watch your power sources... cig lighter power can be kinda flakey I think.

I read this in another thread where someone (can't remember who) couldn't start their car one evening. On a whim they pushed it out from under the streetlight it was sitting under and it started. It seems the ballast lighting (or whatever it is) was causing some kind of interference with his car's computer.

Well I'm pretty frustrated.

I cannot seem to shake whatever is causing this noise. I re-folded the EZK per a suggestion here and placed it in a big anti-static bag. I disconnected my datalogger and made sure the radio was off, cell phone unplugged, etc. I even went to far as t wrap everything up in tinfoil, but I still get these weird false signals... and then all of a sudden 256 knocks! I don't mean it counts up to 256, I mean one second it reads zero, the all of a sudden it says 256.

Any other suggestions? I was going to try and get to the dyno on Sunday, but I'm not going to until I get this figured out.

Did you drive to a new location ? Devek had problems everytime they drove a car out of their garage. They found the problem was a large transmitter mast outside... getting out of the fueld from that down the road cured the "problem".

I didn't even drive it. Just idled it in the driveway, but I'll give it a go just in case tonight.

So it registered lots of knocks even at idle ?

Very strange. I've not known anyone yet who didn't manage to get good results after a little lead management.

But your car also had a problem with a boost guage didn't it ?

I wish I could capture a video for you. Maybe I'll try when i get home. But let me try describing it a bit more clearly.

When it was idling yesterday, I would see the diagnositc lights on the right hand colum flicker to red randomly - or at least they appeared random. Sometime the front nock sensor light would flicker, the coolant temp sensor, then false hall signal, etc. There was no pattern. One or more would flicker every few seconds, but it would not register any knocks. Then all of a sudden... the knock counter would change from 0 to 256 knocks!

As for my electronic boost gauge, yes, I have been having a problem with that but only at high RPMs. The car seems to be running okay, so I'm a bit frustrated. I may see if I can try it in another car to see if I can get it to repeat.

Andrew, was your home built on an Indian burial ground by any chance?

saw the same symptoms on my car and on another shark at greg's place... we swapped out the EZK and it settled down. both units seemed to run the car just fine though. my guess is that it's a conneciton or power/ground issue. I suppose a noisy alt. could do it too.. does your stereo sound crystal clear or do you get static/engine noise? any other electrical anomolies??

the unit is VERY sensitive for sure, iirc it's only a 5v or so system on top of a 12-14v system so there's lots of potential for inductive interference. ie a less than perfect regulator, noisey alt, crappy ground someplace (on a shark?? ha!)....

Thanks Rob. I've got a volunteer with an 88 (Thanks Chaadster) that's going to help me diagnose this weekend. Will try swapping EZK's and report back.

My radio is clear, but that's not to say that I might not have ground/connection issues. I think I'll see if i can clean some of the grounds tonight and tomorrow to clear things up a bit.

Hey Andrew,

We got back to Michigan this week, but with all the family to-do's, couldn't get a time clear to call you. I had some wierd readings a while back on my ST whilst tuning. red lights, high knock numbers......hmmm. I am trying to remember, but it was a while back, I fiddled with connections, RF exposures, all the usual stuff in the thread.....re-booting the computer and system helped, sorting out some of the cable layouts, got to get on a plane, so let me think about this a bit on the way back........maybe its the electrical storms?

Haven't done anything other than try it again outside of the garage. But this time I took a video of what's happening. ENJOY!

256 = 2^8. Anything 2^x points to computer generated number. I think there are four places where it might come from, EZK box, ST hardware, laptop harware or ST Windows software. I would start by trying with different laptop and then EZK box. Those are probably easiest to arrange. One by one each possible source needs to be swaped and eliminated. Its not too difficult to make code inside ST software which will write debug log, if such version doesn't already exist. I'm sure together with John and Niklas you will get to bottom of this fairly quickly.

Errka-

I thought it was odd that I was getting 256, then 512 with the addition of the errant knock.

Well I tried a different laptop, no luck. Chaadster just pulled up, so now well try it on his car... stay tuned... i mean stay sharktuned....
