Well, were not making any progress yet. I'm posting the 3rd gear pull data log we did. Everything goes whacky once we hit 3k RPMs. THoughts?

http://members.rennlist.com/andrewmo...%208-26-07.xls

Another question... if the EZK were the culprit (i.e working with the data we're seeing), wouldn't the car run like ****?

Hello Andrew,
Have you swapped anything around yet ?

I've tuned several EZK with very little trouble......once leads are "tidy".

An EZK could work OK in a car, but still have an issue with the data lines that feed info to the SharkTuner.

Well After talkingto John on the phone, we're both a bit puzzled. DOes anyone have a spare known-good EZK they could loan me or sell to me for cheap?

Well I decided to do some manual mapping of the ignition maps (particularly the WOT map). I burned a chip and popped it in the EZK. I then hooked up Theo's diagnostic computer to check the knock and went out for a drive. I get a few knocks at 2500-3000 RPM and then again at above 6000 RPM.

I've taken out some timing at both points and re-burned a new chip. Haven't had a chance to take it out for another cruise, but I can say that I don't get the erroneous knock using Theo's box to log knock.

I'll still try and get an EZK to swap out, but it's looking to me like that's not the issue. Appears either Jack Riffle or Rogaa have one for me to try. Gotta love Rennlist!

are you using a USB converter or direct serial connection on the laptop?? sometimes those USB things have issues w/some software/inputs... I noticed that sometimes I could still make everything go ape when I just free revved the motor too hard, but under a load it would behave fine... maybe a CPU or buffer gets overwelmed w/data and pukes...

As the LH worked OK with the SharkTuiner then the USB is unlikely to be the problem. The problem appears to lie in interference on the K dataline which runs at a higher speed than on the LH, or Theo's gadget.

Although the EZK needs care in the test setup with the ST, Andrew is the only person I know of who has not suceeded in taming it. So there has to be a problem with his hardware

It's likely to be the EZK ECU of some issue with the car (that also gave wierd results with his boost guage).

John-

FYI, I spoke to DR this AM, and asked him if had ever tuned an EZK with this STer. He said no. I'll test with the EZK Jack Riffle is sending me and will report back.

FWIW, I've tuned some EZ-Ks. S4 & GT. No problems. I've known of a few others who also tuned EZ-Ks. Some had troubles, but all turned out to be external problems (broken wires, plug pins not in tight, power problems, RFI in the area). I did have one EZ-K that wouldn't communicate with the ST at all and that turned out to be a K line fault within the EZ-K. I sent it back to John Speake and he fixed it.

All ST are fully tested on LH & EZK etc. as applicable before dispatch....

What version Software and firmware are you running ? These are shown on the Start up flash screen and at the bottom of the EPROM screen respectively

John-
I'm at the beach right now...

IIRC it says 3.00 for the firmware. Does that sound right? I'll be able to test more on Thursday evening when I get home from work.

Hi Louie-
I don't think it's RFI in the area as we drove it pretty far and continued to experience the anomaly. However, at this point I think we have it narrowed down to either the EZK, the STer, or some RFI emanating from my car. First order will be to swap EZKs and go from there. Thanks for the input - it all helps. I'm dying to get this all done and lay down some big numbers!

Software should be 3.08. Firmware sounds good.

Andrew,
I was thinking over some of the difficulties I've come across. One is that the pins on the diagniostic plug sometimes have to be spread a bit so all fit tightly in the socket. That seems more on the 12 pin rectangular plug than on the round one you have.

Well I tried a different laptop, no luck. Chaadster just pulled up, so now well try it on his car... stay tuned... i mean stay sharktuned....

Does the knock count occur after the same amout of time each time? ie..start the car idle and 30secs later you get the knocks?

Hi Tony!

It's pretty random, but usually within 15 seconds, but sometimes only 5 or 10.

Jack called me while I was on the beach building sand castles with the kids...

Alternative EZK will be here (I mean my house) tomorrow!
