Post The "New 928"...

I've read a little about how Porsche is considering a new V8 car to help utilize the engines being made for Cayennes. It's supposedly to have 4 seats but that's all I've heard.

Dose anyone else know anything about this, or is it just a rumor? - Ruf

Yep, rumored to be out in 2007. Actually seen a picture of the concept car. Sort of looked like a Carrera Gt married to a 996. They were calling it the 989.

The Cayenne V8 is far too tall to make into any typical Porsche automobile. Porsche would need, and probably design a completely new engine. The power and torque curves of are significantly different for an SUV, (ie. low rpm torque) than a sports car (ie maximum performance).

My 2 cents.

I had heard something about the Spys seeing a V8 powered Carrera, but not neccesarily powered by the Cayenne's V8.

A a Porsche engineered Twin Turbo V8 in a 1500kg car would be very exciting, I think they should do it. I know I would.

I don't think that Porsche will totally drop the boxer engines since it's so tightly connected to the brand.

Maybe the 10 cylinder boxter engine from the Carrera GT will have a smaller 8-cyl sibling in a new version of the 911?

Maybe there will even be a four-door 911-style car like the 987 prototype?

Well...

If and when Porsche ever does attempt another 928 designed model for sale…I would hope it would be half as worthy as the present shape we are driving now and not some knock off from an existing model line such as the 996 or other competitors model such as Ferrari or Bla…Bla…Bla…because at that point…it would not be an original design but just another knock off of a previous model and possible fall into the same category as many American models hence the saying, another “Soap Bar” design.

Remember…our 928’s design is as original as one can get and timeless at that

P.S…YMMV

Unfortunately, because the 928 was so revolutionary at it's time, it did not have the expected sales success. Porsche had bet everything on that model, and later found out that it was neither a replacement for the 911 nor the commercial success they had anticipated. Since then they have gotten cold feet, and the Cayenne's looks demonstrate that "fear of rejection". So they go mainstream.

Thie removes the reason for the true design enthusiasts to buy the car, but makes it appealing to the rich conservative crowd. Lexus showed us how that works here in the US - I read that when they did their market research, they were shocked how conservative luxury car buyers really are.

The commercial successes of both Cayenne and Lexus demonstrate how to make money in this market. And that's what theese companies are after. As sad as it is to design freaks like myself...

This gives us good reasons to take well care of our babies for a long time.

928stnlow,

Yeah I think that's it, if it's real. It does look too much like the 996, which makes me wonder if it's not a photo-shop morph.

And as Tim and Nicole say, we probably have the best version there will ever be.- Ruf

I don't believe the photo is a fake.

As for the comments on the originality of this car, if you look at it closely, the car IS different. It maintains the same nose (and rear I guess) as the 911 and Boxster....their trademark look. Remember, when you looked at the 928, you could always tell it was a Porsche, front or back, it had that trademark look.

From a marketing standpoint, you go with what works. The design of the 911 type and the Boxster have been quite successful for Porsche. Radical changes beyond the mainstream is a risk. Porsche had tried this before with less than pleasing results.

So they design a "new" version of the 911 type, and stretch it a bit, move the engine to the front to fit the V8 and throw some rear seats in without drastically changing the looks. I see it as an intellegent approach.

Let's face it, the reason the 911 looks the way it does today, is greatly due to the 928. Because the 928 was discontiued, the evolution of it's design did not necessarily stop with the 928, they just transfered it to the 911.

Now with their recent success in the past 8 or so years, it is time to re introduce a front engine water cooled V8...something that I am sure Porsche has been dreaming about since the sales failure of the 928.

This is the smart way to do this. I myself like the look of the concept car and am willing to bet, that it will surpass the 911 type in many facets....SPEED being one.

If it does come to reality, we'll see if it ever makes it to the racing circuit.

I think it's inevitable their will be another FEWC'd V8...just don't expect it to be called a 928 in any form.

Keith, I hear ya, but it would be nice if they made a few styling bows to the old 928. They could make the headlings look and work the same, and give the rear end that "wide" look, althought the 996 pretty much has that already.

If it's faster than the 996, wouldn't that be the same "doom" the 928 faced originally? - Ruf

Of course your comment comes from a guy who loves the original 928 ...don't hold your breath though.

I would think that because the concept car does resemble the 911 type, it may be easier for the Porsche buying world to swallow...rather than the hard core 911 type guys of the past, not only seeing their beloved Porsche transformed into this hidious monster, snarling with a much better ride, faster : and more expensive, but a complete opposite direction in design from what they percieved the car to be.

I have a feeling that if Porsche does release this car, they may just sport a turbo version that would certainly catapult the car into one of the worlds top exotics. Even more so, I would expect the namesake of the 928 to once rise again, giving more value to our cars. You know that the press will make reference to the 928 if this car comes to be. Maybe even Porsche will make an acknowledgement to the 928 as well...we can only wish!

I think that is a well done 3D model.

Not because it looks particularly fake, but because they do not release pictures of a "real" car, when it is still in development...
