Default Why is this muffler hanger nowhere near my exhaust?

I just replaced two muffler hangers tonight, but thought I would need to replace three. I went looking for the third one and found it, but there's nothing to hang in that area --the headers go around it to the left and right and are pretty far away.

Here's a pic:

Pictured is an engine torque stop, not an exhaust hanger.

John & Ken got it -- it's part of the engine mount(other side shown, but same part each side):

Yep --that's it. Thanks! Looks like that mount needs replacing and I should probably do both at the same time -- only $138 each.

Any of you guys need a brand new rubber muffler hanger? $10 value. I've got an extra --PM me and it's yours.

What's the deal with these *&%$&* muffler hangers? I've had to replace two pair in less than a year, and it's a major PITA at 2 o'clock in the morning on the side of the NJ Turnpike to have to find something to hold the exhaust system in place 'til you get to your Porche guy (no, I didn't realize that carrying spare muffler hangers was a normal part of the survival kit on these). Is it just bad in design or are the hangers poorly constructed (I'm obviously talking about the rubber double-donuts)?

Rhys,

Mine have been in place for about 3 years, holding up great. Maybe that's not a fair comparison, because my exhaust has a different, more robust mount near the tips -- but generally, if you have tension on the exhaust, and you have to twist it into place to get it on the hanger, the hanger is not going to last. If you take up the weight of the exhaust, holding it in a position where there is no stress on any part of it, it should be sitting right against the hanger where you can slip the donut on.

My '78 had three hangers originally -- could you be missing one?

Did you get both of the rear muffler hangers? There's one hiding between the battery box, and the rear bumper cover.

The rubber hangers on my 89 are original and still look good at 180K miles. Of course, my car is very weird in that regard. It lives in some kind of hole in the space-time continuum.

Got that one --didn't see another back there, but I have an AFM Flowmaster on there (came with it when I bought it), which is great for setting off other people's car alarms, but won't be my first choice when I replace it.

I had to take the bolts out in order to get them on --both front and back,, then used the jack (on the front hanger) to push the exhaust pipe up so I could slip the hanger on.

Sounds like your hangers are stressed, Travis -- might want to figure out how to reduce the stress on the hangers.
