If you or your family's butt was in harm's way, I'll bet you'd welcome even what you call a "bad cop." Admittedly some have an attitude (but not very many really) and a few let their thankless job get to them...and none of us like speeding tickets, especially if it's marginal whether we think we deserve them (I have 3 on the books right now...of which one I clearly deserved). Or it could be your contact with the cops that has been in a bad context?. Sorry if that's the case. If a thug shoots you in the chest and tries to take your car, try calling an anger management counselor. I agree, there are a few who shouldn't be wearing the badge but they don't really last a long time.

I'm stopping the reactive barbs with this note...

I've worked for a state police agency and worked with several other agencies (state, county, local, and very little contact with feds). I've also delt with cops quite a bit in other jobs. 90% of the cops out there could lose their jobs today and I wouldn't feel the slightest bit less safe. If a thug shoots me in the chest to steal my car, either I'll kick his corpse a few times while calling an ambulance, or I'll be dead. Either way, a cop is of no help.

Yeah, but cops keep thugs off the streets, so we are inherently safer and living a better life due to enforcement of the laws. Imagine what it would be like if we didn't have any law enforcement? Lord of the Flies!

I'm not talking about "feeling" secure, I'm talking about "being" secure. I agree that feeling secure is a total state of mind. One can feel very secure walking a mine field and they think it's a regular grass field. Once told about the mines, they may feel very unsecure. But that doesn't change the reality of the security because that part hasn't changed.

Based on your previous thread and then this comment, are you advocating getting rid of 90% of the cops will result in no change to our your "actual" security?

How one feels about security, however, is a totally different aspect than true reality. And the reality is that if we remove 90% of the cops on the street, then we will be putting the system of checks & balances of our government completely out of balance. Remember the executive, the legislative and the judicial branches? Removing 90% of any part of the system would indeed have drastic affects.

Great example. Most cops are just the green grass hiding the minefield underneath. You're no safer with grass than with plain dirt.Yes.We can also get rid of 90% of the bureaucrats and politicians. Balance of power has absolutely nothing to do with numbers. If it did, the judicial branch would be powerless.

Whether you feel safe with a bunch of idiots pushing papers, writing tickets, or eating donuts while burning up your paycheck is up to you. The reality is that a very small percentage of cops do anything to make us more secure.

Cops don't live by a different set of rules. If you could get a ticket for it, so could he.

That said, I sure am glad a cop buddy of mine gave me a (whatever the police union is) union sticker for my window.

Firstly, cops have given other cops tickets. So when I used the word could and you read the word would... Well, I don't even know what to say. You're right. Not that it refutes what I initially said.

Anyway, back to my original point (you seem to have missed it) - I really am curious what is illegal about spinning your wheels. Is it just one of those things that you can be ticket for by a (bored) cop by lumping it under some other infraction, or is it against the law in places?

"You left some of your tire on the road, son. Here's a ticket for littering."
