Default Brake/clutch fluid leaking - can't find source

Folks:
Following a power bleeding and replacement of the slave cylinder, I've had the following symptoms for the past two days.

1. The clutch pedal seems to have alot of free play when I push it the first few times. This only happens in the morning, after the car has been idle over night.

2. There is significant dripping of brake fluid from under the driver's side middle section of the hood. (See picture. The whiteboard used to catch the dripping has been rotated, so it shows only relative volume, not location of drip)

3. Clutch engages nicely - there is plenty of travel to the slave cylinder rod as it pushes the plate.

4. I've inspected the underside of the fluid reservoir and the brake cylinder, but can't seem to find any fluid leaks.

I'm worried that I have master slave problems. I topped off the fluid reservoir this morning and will keep watching for drips.

Any suggestions?

Just when I thought the coast was clear.

Peace,
Tim

P.S. Beautiful day here in lovely Mundelein, IL!

Look under the Pod. Check the boot of the master cylinder. When the master goes, typically, fluid seeps out into the interior under the master. You may need to pull the boot back to see...

sounds like a leak with the hardline going into the slave, was it cross threaded? Have you checked to make sure it is seated properly? Could also be the slave bleed valve. I had the same problem.... I ended up having to replace all lines from the master to the slave. Two hardlines and one rubber.... not a difficult job but it took 3 weeks to get one of the hardlines.

my vote is the master; it is easy to push to push it in further than usual when bleeding & then you can damage the seal

How high did you pump up the power bleeder?

I agree check under the floor mat ASAP – if dry your master is most likely fine. Damn blue hose or cracked / leaking reservoir?

I guess you could pump up the power bleeder again, try to force the leak. You do not need to add any fluid to the bleeder for this test. Just attach, pump up to whatever the recommended pressure is (I cannot remember at the moment, I think 10psi) – look for drips.

Well I removed the slave and did the backpush on the slave rod and thus far, the clutch pedal has had no sponginess at all. There was no detectable fluid in the footwell either. Whew!

As for the drips...

I took a closer look at the fluid and it was not the same as the clutch/brake fluid from a coupla days ago.

It turned out to be fresh oil.

The oil pan drain bolt was loose.
I'll check under there again tomorrow.

Thanks, guys, for all the leads.
