Default 928 with Rear Engine or 911 with V8?

Here is an interesting discovery on the Pelican Parts website (I hope this is not old info). There is a link to a 1971 drawing showing the concept of a 911 with a rear V-8 engine (look at the bottom right corner of the drawing which shows "911" and "V8"). I am aware that Porsche has originally intended to replace the 911 with the 928. It is too bad that the 928 series never really took off. Here is the link to the prototype drawing:

The 928 series had no problem "taking off". There were many different thoughts as to the future of Porsche at the time. The thought process at Porsche, at the time, was the air cooled engine would not be able to keep up with the emission standards of the era and so the 928 was in development. What they found out is that they were able to fill different markets with a GT (928 production run) and the high demand for the 911 was not going away.

One thing about Porsche, they would take a concept that was "out dated" and refine it, and refine it more, to what we have today. A car that was not supposed to be, and make it better. The 997.

The one thing that most of us wish for, was the same thought process and research in to making the 928 what it could be today. We will see that in the near future and it is going to be amazing. There are several among us that are trying to do what Porsche would have done with the 928. Sterling's car is a perfect example. A 928 S4 with a higher displacement, using what Porsche did with the Vario-cam that came out on the 968. I don't know what his final HP/TQ is, but it is a ****load more than a stock GTS.

Now that Porsche has produced the "Pepper" with a v-8, has loads of room with the displacement and has produced turbo versions exceeding 500HP. Porsche's thoughts on a super car are going to be realized. What could have been with the 928 is going to be adapted to the Porsche of tomorrow. With the coming of the 4dr Panorama, and it's 2dr variant. I think that Porsche is going to open the door to the idea that, there is a higher performance Porsche that is above and beyond the 911 series cars.

The Cayman is a great current example of this. If the 3.8 of the Carrera or TT were to be installed in the hard top Boxter, heads would turn at the performance.

This is going to be a great new future for our cars, even though the 928 is out of production, and has been since 1995, we have the cars that shot Porsche forward in the era of front engine performance.
