Default 1985 928...take it for $1,000

OK guys...here's the deal. This is NOT my car. Just got a call from a good friend who owns a garage. He had a client come in yesterday with his 928 on a flatbed....apparently the timing belt let loose and whatever happens when that happens...happened. (does this make sense?).

The owner is pissed, and doesn't want to deal with it. He told my friend that the first $1,000 takes the car. Here's all I know about the car.

It's a 1985 928...red. Never been wrecked and no dings or dents. The tires are "fairly new", and the car and interior are "about a 7-8 out of 10". The car had 144K miles on it when the belt went. Up to that time it was a daily driver. All the periperals work.

I have no idea whether or not $1K for a car like this is a good deal or not. I just thought I'd throw this out to the guys on the 928 board who know the car and know what a good (or bad) value is. The engine is in the car, but whether it's good enough for a core I don't know.

The car will be located at:

Auto and Truck Masters
7307 Roseville Rd # 10
Sacramento, CA 95842
(916) 349-8860

My friend the garage owner is Larry. You can call him directly and talk to him about the car. It's going to be there till this friday...4/27/07, after which it's going to a wrecking yard where they'll undoubtedly part it out and charge you guys twice as much.... I'm a 996 guy, so I don't have much else I can tell you, other than I hope this turns out to be something a Rennlister can use to his advantage. Guys.....I am making nothing from this...just a service to fellow Rennlisters.

Good luck guys...hope this helps someone.

Chuck

Thanks for the heads up Chuck. Would be a fantastic buy for someone good with a wrench and looking to own a Porsche.

Call me crazy but it sounds like the 928 that broke down in AZ a few weeks ago and the person getting it just had to pay the wreck yard fees?

Jack: I was truly hoping that it would be a good buy for someone. The info isn't more than an hour old...so someone is going to score. I had to be very careful about how I described it because I took all the info by phone from my friend Larry. Actually, he was looking at it as he described it, and he said that the interior was really in nice shape. He did say that the paint job was a cheapie....but for $1K and a new or rebuilt engine....I think you're right....someone could jump into ownership of a Porsche.

I sincerely hope a Rennlister can snag it. I just posted this to the RennTech forum also.

Steve: Nope...not dead...don't draw cartoons, don't announce sports....don't do much of anything since I retired except play with my cars and go fishing.

Oh...and by the way Giovanni....no this isn't the AZ car. Here I am just trying to give fellow Rennlisters a heads up, and it's starting to turn into a circle jerk. No, this is a California car, not an Arizona car. Sheesh! I'm going back to the 996 board.

Hell, I think Brendan just posted an engine for sale today at really fair price, but the engine probably doesn't need replaced. Timing belt/Water pump tensioner and heads and it should be fine. Too bad it's so far away from me. Oh, and my garage isn't big enough for another Porsche.

I did not mean for it to sound like it was the same car, just almost the same scenario, another OB given for almost nothing due to having mechanical breakdown. Have you guys noticed that rennlisters lately are getting some really good deals on 928s?

Hey Chuck,

Do you happen to know if its an auto or manual tranny? If not, no problem, those that are really interested can call the shop where its at.

And thanks for the heads up, this sounds like a smokin' deal for someone.

If this were on the east coast I'd be all over it. Hope somebody here gets to benefit.

I have some 86 heads and an 86 intake assembly the buyer could "refresh" and get the car back on the road for a flip sale that much sooner.
