It is plenty strong, but does not reach deep enough to get the hook over the center of the motor. You can make it work by either pulling the front bumper or engaging in stupid and dangerious acts, but a better choice would be to step up the the extra $30 or so and buy the 2 ton hoist. Which I noticed it on sale this week for the price I paid for the 1 ton hoist last week.

Polish lift
Not that I recommend others do this but I currently have my engine hoisted by a self built engine hoist.(I so wish I had pictures of this) Its made entirely out of wood and with heavy duty chain(w/ pulleys attache)wrapped twice around the center of the cross beam which is a 4x4 fence post about 8ft long. The two upright post are 4x4 shortened by a little more than a foot to fit in my garage and they are supported by 2x4 braces. The beauty of it was that it took only a couple hours to make and cost $20 in lumber.
As for strenght this handmade lift has held up my engine unsupported by the MM for a week now and there is only slight bowing in the cross beam(nothing to worry about I'm sure....well I think, or hope maybe). I really owe it to my genius grandfather and my Polish heiritage to allow me to do this. Once again not that anyone will but I do not recommend anyone using this design. It is untested and likely unsafe, but if you got some Polish in you maybe this just may appeal to you.

polish lift , ey?
noone will be doing this polish design... i am sure
specially without any photo's.... it prolly would turn out in a russian design and crash like that
concord-copy, the russians build ones. or their funky space shuttle.
but is sounds freakin tempting after all those warnings you told us of not building it

I wouldn't feel comfortable to use a 1 ton hoist. With the arm fully extended you will be somewhere in the vicinity of a 250 kg lift capacity. That is pretty much the limit for a 928 engine.
Question: Why didn't you by the 2 Ton hoist? Only 50 bucks more.

I have the folding hoist from HF. I think its only 2000lbs at its shortest position, although i could be wrong. I use it at the maximum extension and it is just barely long enough to pull the engine from the front. At its longest extension its only rated at 25% of the maximum

Why don't you try lifting out the engine from the side of the car instead? Would it still be too short? I've lifted many engines from the side but none were from a 928.

Schocki, you are right of course. I should have stopped the project, taken the hoist back apart, and exchanged it. But I am impatient and cheap and not that adverse to stupid dangerious behavior. The motor is out, the engine compartment is mostly cleaned up and the new motor is mostly prepped to go in. Hopefully this weekend it will be set in place.
Imo, I looked at taking it out from this side, but I am working in a somewhat low carport and did not have enough clearence to get it up over the fender.
The one ton is actually working OK (kinda) for me so far, and my project is moving well. I just wanted to post this as a reference for the next guy. When I purchased the hoist my new motor was in the bed of a fairly tall pickup and I was mostly worried about whether it would go high enough to lift the motor off the bed. Didn't think at all about boom length.
