Default Driving from Chicago to San Diego May 12-16th

Anything going on that I should know about? I think 4 days is enough to get there without running it ragged. Right? I am bringing a car back from Chicago (non-928, but it will be 928 helpful as a tow vehicle)

The route takes me through LV, so there may be a stop planned for at least there.

The route as currently planned is through De Moines, Iowa, and then over and down through Denver, CO, and Vegas.

My dad & I did Denver to Santa Barbara in 4 days, which is an easy pace. Don't be tempted to divert through Yosemite; although it's a fantastic drive, Tioga Pass doesn't open until Memorial Day. There's also a 140 mile stretch through Nevada in which there are [b]no[/i] services, so you'd better be running well if you take that route. But if you're going through Vegas you'll turn south before you hit that stretch.

4 days is really easy, I've done it in two, and it's rough. Chicago to Denver is dull, dull, dull. But Denver to LA is cool. Make sure you leave Denver early in the morning so you go through Western Utah, Northern AZ (for 10 miles or so) during daylight, the scenery mindblowing.

When you're in Chicago make sure to get some deepdish Chicago pizza at a Giordanos http://www.giordanos.com/, Pizzaria Uno is overrated. And get yourself a real Vienna Beef Chicago Hotdog, the best ones anywhere.

Lastly, check out Luxury Motors Gold Coast which is near the heart of downtown. They've had Carerras GT, Enzo, etc. there pretty regularly. It's what one would imagine a car dealer in Monte Carlo would look like, but probably doesn't.

Thanks for the advice on Denver scott. I have done this trip in a few different ways before. I actually moved out here from Chicago (well, a lily-white suburb of Chicago called Arlington Heights, after living there my first 22 years.

And yes, Uno is over rated.

If you want deep-dish, go to Lou Malnati's. The Malnati's started Uno's, and Lou's is where the real deep-dish recipe continues.

Uno's was all about going to the old Superior street location, not the same going to the new location, and the other locations don't have the same mystique. Kinda like if the Cubs moved out of Wrigley Field.

Brendan,

Arlington Heights is lily white, I grew a little way down Northwest Highway in Park Ridge, which is equally lily white, we had the kind of diversity one finds in Idaho or Montana. We had three Jewish kids in my high school, but one of their families would get a Christmas tree every year! Los Angeles was certainly different, even after living in Philadelphia for four years. The old Unos was great, with carving on the tables and booths. I think about 20% of Southern California is from Chicago. Brendan, are you a mortgage guy also?

And another 20 from Wisconsin, Michigan and ohio.

But as they say, not many are from LA. But if you ARE from LA, you are probably actually from Pasadena.

No Mortgage - I'm an Insurance/Financial Asset protection guy.

I've heard of Malnati's but not tried it. I will say that the best pizza I ever had was a deep dish at Giordano's in Chicago. Sausage, mushroom and onion. Waay better than Uno's in my neophyte opinion.

Hey, Brendan - I'm on your journey's route - stop by for a frosty tomato juice!

When I'm at Giordano's I get the stuffed spinach. WHen I want deep dish I head to Lou's. Well, I have both nearby, so usually it's delivery cause I"m lazy. You'll like the deluxe, same ingredients plus green peppers.

Brendan - if your schedule's not too hectic and you want to reminisce all things Chicago, let me know. There's a few other Chicago 928 folks around as well. You may be on a tight schedule and it's not like you've never been here before , so you won't hurt any feelings if you are visiting family during your limited time here or are otherwise occupied.

Do you know Pink? As in Mr. Pinkpank? What about finding the infamous Z for me? He never answers his phone and I don't have his email. I know another way of getting ahold of Z through the cheese channel, but not Pinkpank (951 turbo, black)

Tempting. If I take 15 down from Vegas I won't, but if there is any diversion, I may need to show the navigator your GTS. Make sure he sees what a 928 looks like together and washed.

The infamous Z I know, never heard of Mr Pinkpank. Perhaps we can get some of the local crew together. It always seems to be a challenge, as you know the Chi-town area is quite a sprawl, so we're not all actually that close, but Dave, Tim and Z are fairly nearby to me. If you want to try to get together, I'll put out some feelers.
