Default Vette guy with a question

Hello folks, I posted the following to another board and thought I'd post it here in hopes of getting some info.
---------
I'm a Vette guy, don't know anything about a 928, but had a lousy encounter with one today. On several sprints, the guy left me in his tire smoke, and I'm running just over 450 hp at the flywheel. At one stop light I asked him if he was boosted or nos, and he said no. He sounded like a top fueler when we blipped throttles in the tunnel to Imperial, but at lower rpm it doesn't sound boosted, and he can light the tires while going about 30 mph, then just launches when the rubber grabs. I think he's probably lying about the nos. My question to you guys, is it possible he could be running nos and getting that much power out of it? I just checked some websites and see that car, S4 it showed on the rear bumper, should have about 320 hp and weigh about 400 pounds more than my C6.
---------

Then I posted follow up info.

---------
Coming out of LAX on 105 S. then going through the tunnel then taking right turn out of tunnel to get on Imperial to get to El Segundo. Car was either blue with grey hue, or sometimes looked green with grey hue, depending on the light. Probably a tourist, had Utah plates, and huge back tires, probably 315s or bigger. The only times I've heard that kind of exhaust is at the drags. I thought maybe he had straight cut pipes under the car, but saw a dual exhaust on the left side. Looked like it had the bumper cut out to run the exhaust out there.
---------

I'm a life long Vette owner, and don't plan on changing that, but am curious about what could have been done to that 928 to make it so fast.

Thanks,
jokerC6

Nope not boosted, thats how fast they are.....Porsche, Unlike GM, rated everything real low in print. Dr Porsche did want anyone to be disappointed, so they say

You may have bumped into WALT long time 928 owner who has done MUCH wrenching on 928s . Had a 6.1 liter at one time as I recall. He no longer posts on the list or forums.

Stock, he would not have been able to do that. So his S4 was either stroked/bored or huffed. Huffed, they can easily do what you describe.

Hi Joker,

The two basic routes to big power on the 928 are building a stroker motor ($$$) or forced-induction ($ to $$). Some people combine the two, but the upper limit for the drivetrain is around 650hp. There a few people who run NOS but they are proud of it and would not lie - one guy in the UK is planning a nitrous-boosted 200mph run. Judging by your hearing big rumbles, I'm guessing you got eaten by a stroked Shark.

Also, the 928 design is perfect for rolling starts, especially freeway jaunts. I love the acceleration from 100mph on up...

So what have you done to your C6 to get a mere 450 hp out of it? I love those motors BTW.

I tend to agree with Jim...sounds like Walt. What did the guy look like? We could verify who it was then. I wouldn't expect Walt to just come out and tell you the truth...he would let you squirm for a bit.

We all know its quite a feat to roast a C6 or even a C5, anything below those gens that are stock are a non issue with a stock 928. I suspect you would have been able to tell if someone was running an SC, they can still be heard when spooled up.

I would think a stroker and as mentioned, a rolling start for a 928 is to the 928's advantage as its rear end is suited to torque at speed.

I would have given a few dollars to see the look on your face as he did his thing (no offense of course to you), its probably the same look most everyone has when they see a "fat and lazy" 928 display some seriously impressive performance.

Thanks for posting! And even though I'm not a Vette guy, I do think the late model Z06's are fantastic cars and look the part! Would love to own one of those!

Perhaps the Vette needed to go to the Vet? Batch of bad gas? Constipated cat? (I could go on with this for a while...)

Is the King Kong 6.5L 89GT still around California? I know Rick was trying to sell it a while back. It is grey with large rear rubber. That is one of a few 928's that would dessimate a C6.

I saw him post this same question on Pelican about a week ago and he seems legit.

Lets be nice, we may end up with another 928 enthusiast out of the deal. If nothing else, he will spread the gospel of BWAAAA.

Vettes are always welcome when Sharks gather. (You just have to park far away.)
EDIT - that's my wife's Z06. It's a pretty good parts-getter for the 928s.

Vettes are also the 2nd best sounding car on the race track.
