The windage tray and pan spacer will fit in any engine. We handmade 3 sets, for testing purposes, and they are all in engines already....and the design was literally done 3 weeks ago. We are making another batch of 6 sets, but not by hand like the prototypes. The windage trays have to be fabricated one at a time....so this is not cheap stuff to do! We are having the pan spacers cut out....although the people that are doing it are on their third attempt! They have wasted a whole bunch of aluminum!

We took about .050" off of the base circle of the cam and then made the valves .050" longer. No lash caps needed.

The home for this engine is in a race car. The owner didn't want to convert it to a later engine, but wanted to try and keep it looking original. Looking at the torque, compared to Anderson's race engine before the carbon fiber intake from Phil, makes me think he might have guessed right.

The exhaust is a very old set of Devek headers and apparently one of his 3.5" single pipe exhausts. The headers are actually too small and the thing should be much happier with some dual mufflers.

I'm too stupid to figure out how to post the dyno sheet, much less pictures, but someone who knows how might stop by and help me. Joe...you out there?

Thanks. My visual of how I did it was getting in the way of what I was reading. If you are making 968 valve sizes anyway, or in this case somewhat larger then S3 sizes, its a great thing to skip the lash caps. I simply misread.

Any changes to the ports for the larger valves? I would assume some custom valve seats were used, or were the valves specified to existing seat sizes?

GregBBRD how thick is the oil pan spacer? Using the stock starter?

As I wait for a qoute for my 86.5 "stock" engine rebuild and contemplate what other mods to do to increase HP/TQ without getting into the cost of a stroker, I can't help but think of a $5000+ crate motor ( with no core charge!) from Chevy, Ford and so on with claimed 400+ HP and TQ to match.

Sorry, don't mean to bring this up in this very timely (for me) thread.

Congratulations Greg!! The owner must be very happy.

Greg - very impressive results...

I suspect you may be getting some calls for some more OB engine work now...

I know its still not inexpensive - but for those who want to build on what they have - it opens up a lot of new possibilities...!

We used 968 sized intakes and later 928 sized exhausts. The intake seats we changed, but the exhaust seats were left alone and throated. The heads were ported in house. I've owned my own flow bench for over 20 years.

The pan spacer is .375". The stock starter will clear, but you need to do a bit of clearancing for that to happen. We left out the pan gasket, so the actual lowering of the pan is just a bit over .250. We figured every little bit would help. Those rods get really close in a stroker engine!

I'm about 3 miles from 928 International. That's the ONLY reason I can work on 928's. It is really handy to have a place that has everything you could ever want for a 928 with guys that know everything about these cars so close. I rely on these guys every day and they always come through.

Yes, the car is still here. It leaves for its home in Canada, Friday. Still have a few things to do with suspension, idle mixture, etc.

Hi Greg,
Great results! Congrats. Is the windage tray/sump cover/crank scrapers very much different than what I use? I'm wondering because I have not had my car on the track yet and I'm trying to anticipate what might happen with the oiling.

Louis:

As I mentioned, I "borrowed" your spacer idea. You're a genius. I didn't use anything like you used for a scraper or windage tray set-up. I have not had good results with scrapers on a 928 engine. The oil seems to get trapped above the scrapers and then gets slung back up towards the head (1-4 side) on all the ones I've seen. I think this is because of the huge quanity of oil that is returning from the heads down the sides of the block. I am looking forward to seeing how yours work, however. I haven't seen any that fit as well as yours, which could make all the difference in the world. I'll send you some pictures of what I came up with for the windage trays.

Very cool. Good work Greg.

BTW, have I mentioned to the group, recently, that Greg rebuilt the engine on my (ahem... CarChicks') Iris Blue GTS?

Greg, We would all love to see pics of the windage tray. If you would like to e-mail them to me I would be glad to post them since you are having trouble.

Either way, great work.
